Field Applications Engineer

Position Description:

Under the general direction of the VP Sales and Marketing this position is responsible for assisting the sales organization by providing technical engineering support. This position will act as a technical liaison between a broad base of customers and supply chain partners. Expertise in all classification types of rigid, flex and rigid-flex PCBs, assisting customers with the implementation of new technologies and materials into their PCB designs, previewing designs for manfacturability (DFM), cost considerations and optimum component assembly (DFA).

Relationships with customer engineering groups and technical staff will be established and maintained. In addition, this position will provide on-site technical support to customers by reviewing customer specifications, analyzing customer designs for manufacturability, provide training to customers on DFM guidelines and develop solutions for customer applications.

Job Description:

Key Responsibilities:

* Assist sales organization by providing technical engineering support

* Present technical sales presentations as needed

* Acts as a technical liaison between customer electrical, design and component engineering groups and internal engineering and operations

* Establishes and maintains relationships with customer engineering groups and technical staff

Key Responsibilities, cont.:

* Provide on-site technical support to customers by reviewing customer specifications, analyzing customer designs and suggests changes as necessary for manufacturability

* Train customers on Somacis’ DFM guidelines

* Responsible for developing solutions for custom applications

* Contributes to the definition and design of products/processes

* Working knowledge of customer related disciplines and the ability to develop non-standard approaches to customer solutions

* Work closely with internal engineering team members to develop statistical manufacturing data bases and simulation tool sets for material stack-ups, impedance, loss tangent, attenuation and other electrical analysis of customer products prior to fabrication

* Provide input to internal engineering team members on emerging technologies and establishes development priorities

* Collaborate with senior technical resources on complex projects

* Effectively manage projects

* Ensure project goals and customer needs are met

* Ability to plan and establish resource levels of major projects requiring the use of multiple technical disciplines and significant customer representative input.

Communication

* Ability to communicate by providing reports, technical summaries and recommendations using word processing and spreadsheet programs

* Demonstrated ability to effectively present technical data/reports to all levels within the organization, customers and suppliers

* Ability to communicate project goals and outcomes and enlist and motivate the participation of other technical/manufacturing resources to achieve objectives

* Assists with the compliance of environmental, health, and safety regulations.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

* Requires a Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or Computer Science or related field or equivalent experience.

* Two to Four years of progressively complex technical experience in PCB manufacturing processes involving the latest state-of-the-art applications and techniques and the demonstrated ability to incorporate this knowledge as required

* Ability to execute detailed instructions and procedures.

* Ability to understand basic software architecture. Must have extensive computer applications literacy

* Must have extensive computer applications literacy

* Ability to solve multiple complex problems in an environment with a variety of technical and organizational constraints

* Statistical Process Control and Design of Experiment of knowledge required

* Knowledge of at least one of these software: VALOR CAD/CAM systems (Star 1000, Genesis 2000, Enterprise 3000), Impedance modelers (POLAR, CoreStack) and ERP/MRP systems (SAP/P3, AS400, Baan)

* Strong communication skills, both verbal and written

* Ability to communicate to a varied audience effectively

* Must possess broad based judgmental capabilities

* Well-defined negotiation skills

Working Environment:

Office environment and field travel to customer locations. Extended hours to coincide with customer and factory needs. Must be able to drive to test site independently. Travel up to 50% of work time.

Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional publications, legal documents and government regulations. Ability to write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers and the general public.

Physical Demands:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls and talk to hear. The employee frequently is required to sit. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. The employee may occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
