Job Summary: Functions as a leader within the organization by establishing a climate of mutual trust, supporting an innovative and motivating environment. Manages the day to day operations of the Respiratory Department, ensures evidence-based patient centered practice is provided and supports the hospital's mission and vision.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

• Provides direct clinical care as RCP when the urgency of the situation dictates. Stays abreast of current evidence-based practice. Maintains personal and professional development to ensure competency.
• Monitors care provided by staff and ensures that therapy and interventions are evidence based best practice.
• Demonstrates clinical judgement and decision making by the ability to assess static and dynamic situations and applying evidence based solutions. Exhibits clinical judgment through problem-solving techniques and effective time management.
• Manage day to day operations including: Establish assignments for shift. Redistributes workload as needed based on assessment of workload and acuity. Addresses issues involving patient care, patient needs, equipment and supplies and communicates needs and updates with department leadership. Address and communicate all schedule changes Assist with patient education or discharge orders or supplies as needed. Address equipment and departmental concerns utilizing work order systems as needed. Communicate issues, concerns, needs or changes with the Manager or Director of Respiratory Services.
• Assist with audits and collection of department metrics and outcomes.
• Initiates and supports performance improvement and other initiatives.
• Develop, schedule and complete yearly staff competencies as needed. Oversee the competency process for clinical ladder participants. Maintain documentation of yearly staff competencies
• Blood Gas Laboratory oversight.
• Coordinate and oversee all aspects of employee orientation process. Ensures appropriate standards of care are maintained within Respiratory Care practice provided.

Quality and Safety, Outcomes and Financial Stewardship

• Ensure Hospital and regulatory performance, service and quality requirements are met.
• Prioritizes patient safety by demonstrating HRO behaviors and fostering a fair and just culture.
• Participates in daily safety huddles and identifies and risks or threats to patient or employee safety.
• Provides patient centered care and demonstrates evidence based practice and standards of care.
• Facilitates participation in program development. Develops change and assists staff in understanding and adjusting.
• Establishes department goals and monitors progress.
• Responsible for appropriate staff utilization.
• Manages and controls expenses within budgetary guidelines.
• Manages equipment and plans for capital replacement as indicated.

Communication and Collaboration

• As part of the management team, works interdepartmentally and serves on hospital committees as appropriate to achieve team and hospital objectives. Facilitates/participates in program development. Supports change and assists staff in understanding and adjustment. Promotes learning opportunities for staff. Serves as an advocate, and role model for staff. Executes general responsibilities common to all management personnel.
• Responsible for promoting good communication and teamwork between all the Hospital's constituencies, including but not limited to staff, patients, families, and other providers in the continuum of care. Communicate professionally and effectively with all stakeholders including management, board members, and external relationships.
• Ensures RCP team remains up to date with hospital and department communication, safety concerns and issues, outcomes and performance improvement initiatives through safety huddle, email and department meetings.
• Works with other department leadership to coordinate overall delivery of care.
• Prioritizes needs in delivery of care service.

Leadership, Professionalism and Expertise

• Provides leadership and development to staff therapists. Fosters an environment of growth and mentorship. Mentor clinical ladder applicants.
• Performance management responsibilities include completing performance appraisals, staff development, support of clinical ladder candidates and utilizing performance improvement or disciplinary process as indicated.
• Responsible for hiring, evaluating, promoting, transferring, and terminating all employees in the department following established hospital policies and procedures.
• Executes general responsibilities common to all management personnel. Integrates with management staff to implement change. Support management initiatives, company mission, vision, values, and standards of performance.
• Ensures participation of professional respiratory staff as active members of the interdisciplinary care team.
• Remains current on industry standards, developments new techniques and trends.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

Directly supervises FTE and multiple per diem employees in the Respiratory Care Department. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees; planning assigning and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Department on-call rotation for emergencies and sick calls. Other supervisory responsibilities may include but are not limited to, payroll, covering for the director in his/ hers absence.

Qualifications:

• Associate's degree (A.S.) from accredited college or university; Bachelor's Degree in Respiratory Care or health related field with a minimum of 5 years clinical experience with strong intubation skills.
• Current RRT certificate, license from the State of Connecticut,
• AHA BLS and ACLS certificates.
• Certification and registration by the National Board for Respiratory Therapy.
• Competent in performing Basic Life Support and Foreign Body Airway Management on adults. Able to provide care to adolescents through geriatric patient populations.
• Ability to draw and analyze ABG's.
• Microsoft office suite preferred.
