Behavioral Health Coordinator

The Behavioral Health Coordinator (BHC) plans, organizes and supervises a program or team, which includes direct client care, indirect client care and/or administrative coordination and support of behavioral health and related activities. Incumbents receive direction from a Manager II or a higher-level department administrator. Incumbents typically supervise, directly or through leadership, professional, para-professional and support staff; and are responsible for guiding, advising, consulting, and coordinating work in a specific program area. Although specific duties may vary depending on the job location, the focus of duties is on the coordination and supervision of a program and/or staff; incumbents are expected, however, to have clinical or professional expertise in a behavioral health field. Positions in this classification are typically located in behavioral health or substance use disorder sites.

Typical tasks include: planning, organizing and supervising the work of staff in a direct service program; discussing or interpreting departmental rules and programs to staff and the public; assisting and participating in the development of in-service staff development programs; working with other supervisors in coordinating the activities of professional and technical staff; representing the agency and resolving issues in a multi-disciplinary team; assisting in the development of community resources for programs; receiving and preparing correspondence and reports; evaluating the performance of personnel and taking appropriate action; providing positive leadership and guidance; attending in-house meetings and committees to promote cooperation, organization and collaboration; implementing systematic changes regarding Electronic Health Record (EHR) system; acting as a department representative on community committees; bridging the gap between upper management and direct service staff; monitoring clerical operations and compliance of timeframes; communicating with fiscal staff, monitoring budgets and distributing wrap around funds; monitoring that clients' needs are being met and productivity is maintained by staff; engaging in efforts to reduce stigma in individuals and community; promoting team building and good morale; coordinating the operations of the facility and maintaining a safe work environment; providing effective clinical and behavioral interventions; adhering to documentation policy in accordance with State and Federal guidelines; implementing and monitoring Results Based Accountability outcomes; using multiple sources of data, reports and outcomes to help manage team; advocating for staff when necessary; and other duties as assigned.

Minimum qualifications (knowledge, skills, abilities, education/experience) include: knowledge of principles, methods and resources in the field of public health, mental health, education, correction and rehabilitation; technique of staff supervision, evaluating, training, and casework consultation to staff; principle of community organization; resource available in the community for referral or utilization in social service programs; peer/consumer value in the work place; mental health services act essential elements and four transformational elements; client driven strength-based culturally competent treatment; and multi-cultural skills, knowledge and experience. Skills/abilities include: applying the recovery principles of behavioral health practice; strong personal and professional ethics; assessing safety and risk factors; demonstrating a commitment to the safety, permanency and well-being of children, vulnerable adults, and families; planning, assigning and supervising the work of others; applying effective interpersonal skills; developing and maintaining cooperative relationships with community groups and resource agencies; presenting oral and written reports concisely and clearly; analyzing a situation accurately and adopting an effective course of action; training and mentoring staff in strength-based practice; evaluating staff and recommending disciplinary action when appropriate; maintaining professional and ethical boundaries; working as a positive team member and defining roles; and using effective and assertive communication, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills. Education/experience includes: two (2) years of experience performing duties comparable to the Stanislaus County Behavioral Health Specialist II or a Behavioral Health Advocate (one (1) year of graduate work in psychology, social work, counseling or psychiatric nursing may be substituted for no more than one (1) year of the required experience); and for substance use disorder programs, certification or registration with a State approved Substance Use Disorder organization is required.
