The facility has 247 licensed beds and is a teaching hospital. It serves as a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center and is a certified stroke center. The unit consists of 20 beds, divided into two sides with centralized nursing stations. The patient population includes children aged 0-18 with congenital heart differences. Patients may have undergone surgery and medical management for various cardiac conditions. The nurse-to-patient ratio varies based on acuity, typically ranging from 1:1 to 2:1. There are no CNAs, but one nursing assistant is available for unit support each day. The nursing staff is supported by a charge nurse and resource nurse. Respiratory therapy is available 24/7, along with round-the-clock cardiology and intensivist coverage. Patients are monitored continuously, and technology includes EPIC for EMR and various medical devices. Floating may occur to other pediatric units as needed. Weekend rotation is every other weekend, and holidays will require working 75% of the time. Scheduling is completed on a six-week cycle, with requests for time off subject to manager approval. The unit culture emphasizes teamwork, trust, and accountability.
