Job Title Assistant Professor (Education) Job Number 26000808 Department Durham Centre for Academic Development (DCAD) Contract Fixed Term – Part Time (52 weeks) Closing Date 13 July 2026 Key Responsibilities Deliver lectures, seminars and tutorials across the Social Sciences programme at Foundation level, and perform related assessment duties. Engage in pedagogic activity at departmental level that supports a high‑quality academic professional community of practice. Maintain active membership and engagement with a professional body (e.g., HEA, Foundation Year Network, discipline‑specific bodies). Contribute to ongoing curriculum development, demonstrating innovation in educational practice to enhance the quality of the educational environment at the Department and wider University. Contribute to administrative work and support citizenship and values of the Department. Engage in and enhance the Department’s commitment to its vibrant and international postgraduate culture. Carry out other duties as specified by the Head of Transitions / DCAD Deputy Director (Student Success). Qualifications and Experience Qualifications – A good first degree and a PhD (or close to completion at the time of application) in a Social Sciences discipline, or equivalent practitioner experience and skills, which may include relevant certification and/or membership of a professional body. Quality – Evidence of the development and delivery of effective and engaging teaching (e.g., student evaluation scores, peer reviews). Innovation – Evidence of contribution to new programme development and design of high‑quality teaching and assessment, including use of technology or other techniques. Strategic – Evidence of strategic teaching development or achievements that demonstrate potential to design excellent teaching programmes that are research‑informed. Scholarship and Educational Impact Active membership and engagement with a professional body. Internal awards supporting educational innovation and scholarly activity. Demonstrable innovation in educational practice (e.g., online learning, research‑led teaching, employer engagement, curriculum and course development, student guidance). Publication in a scholarly journal or relevant professional publication. Attendance and presentation at internal and/or external seminars or regional conferences. Materials or curriculum development for wider use in the Department or beyond. Service, Citizenship and Values Evidence of participation in citizenship/administrative activities of an academic department, faculty or University. Excellent oral and written communication skills, with the ability to engage with a range of students and colleagues. Evidence of administrative experience related to teaching in an academic department. Earned or Desirable Criteria (Optional) Leadership experience, such as leading internal working groups, module development, effective educational administration or change processes in a department.
