Registered Nurse

The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care. This includes executing orders from Licensed Independent Providers. Dispensing and administering medications and assisting with examinations and treatment of patients are essential. Nursing and supervisory techniques are applied in the care and treatment of inmates/residents. All technical and clinical procedures fall within the scope of education and licensure. Appropriate nursing skills are necessary in the treatment of inmates/residents. Attendance during sick calls with the physician is required. Preparation of a list of inmates/residents to be examined is necessary. Examining rooms and equipment must be properly prepared. Pill call operations, medication dispensing, and documentation are part of the responsibilities. Communication with Licensed Independent Providers for medication, treatment orders, and emergencies is essential. Examinations and assessments of new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries are conducted. Referrals to emergency rooms or appropriate healthcare facilities may be necessary based on the condition. Emergency procedures must be performed as needed, with notifications made to Licensed Independent Providers. Coordination of professional medical services provided by contract personnel is part of the role. Monitoring inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases is necessary. Guidance and supervision of nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff are required. Maintaining good working relationships with facility staff, nursing staff, and outside provider agencies is essential. Corporate, facility, and correctional policies and procedures should be utilized for decision-making. Regular evaluations of medical services are necessary to prevent inappropriate use or duplication. Absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records must be maintained. Reviewing medical files with the Health Service Administrator for proper documentation is required. Monitoring potential catastrophic illnesses closely is expected. Auditing pharmacy use for adherence to formulary is necessary. Compliance with all applicable pharmacy laws, particularly regarding controlled substances, is required. Observing and recording inmate/resident behavior is part of the duties. Inspections of the medical unit for contraband items are essential, and secure disposal of supplies is necessary. Providing health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis is required. Assistance to the Health Service Administrator in preparing and maintaining standard records and reports is necessary. Reading, analyzing, comprehending, and interpreting medical and technical procedures and regulations is expected. Processing and responding to lawsuits in conjunction with corporate counsel is part of the role. Facilitating the accreditation of the medical program by providing efficient and appropriate medical services is required. Preparation of safety and accident reports according to policies and procedures is necessary. Appropriate actions should be taken in response to serious incidents and emergencies.
