Director of Development

Department: Resource Development / Development Job Status: Full Time FLSA Status: Exempt Reports To: Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Grade/Level: Director Amount of Travel Required: Moderate Local Travel Job Type: Leadership/Management Positions Supervised: Resource Development Coordinator Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, with frequent evening and weekend event attendance as required Position Summary / Objective The Director of Resource Development is responsible for leading, planning, and executing a comprehensive fundraising and revenue strategy to support the mission and long‑term sustainability of the organization. This role oversees all fundraising operations, including major gifts, corporate partnerships, annual campaigns, special events, grants, RFP submissions, donor stewardship, community engagement, and revenue tracking. The Director of Resource Development provides strategic oversight to the Resource Development Coordinator and ensures fundraising initiatives align with organizational goals, revenue targets, compliance requirements, and brand positioning. Essential Functions Develop and implement a comprehensive annual fundraising plan with measurable revenue goals. Design and lead Annual Campaign and Year‑Round Giving Campaign strategies. Establish short‑term and long‑term revenue growth plans. Diversify funding streams through individual giving, corporate sponsorships, foundations, grants, and special events. Present fundraising strategies, performance metrics, and revenue forecasts to Executive Leadership and the Board of Directors. Monitor fundraising trends and recommend innovative revenue‑generating opportunities. Major Events Oversight & Revenue Accountability Provide strategic oversight and coordination of major fundraising events, including Youth of the Year Dinner, Annual Golf Outing, Family Block Party, and other fundraising initiatives. Develop sponsorship packages and revenue projections for fundraising events. Cultivate event sponsors, donors, and community partners. Ensure events meet or exceed established fundraising and attendance goals. Oversee event budgets, vendor negotiations, contracts, and post‑event financial analysis. Evaluate event effectiveness and implement continuous improvements. Grants, RFPs & Institutional Funding Identify and pursue foundation, corporate, and government funding opportunities. Develop and maintain relationships with government agencies, elected officials, foundations, and community stakeholders. Lead the writing, review, and submission of grant applications, proposals, and RFP responses. Develop and maintain a grant calendar to ensure timely submissions and reporting. Ensure compliance with grant requirements, deliverables, and reporting obligations. Collaborate with program leadership to collect outcome data, success stories, and program impact information. Donor Cultivation & Stewardship Build, cultivate, and maintain relationships with major donors, sponsors, and corporate partners. Develop stewardship plans that increase donor retention and expand giving levels. Create donor recognition and appreciation strategies. Partner with Board members and organizational leaders to strengthen donor engagement. Maintain accurate donor records and engagement activities within donor management systems. Corporate & Community Engagement Serve as the primary liaison for corporate partnerships, sponsorship opportunities, and volunteer engagement initiatives. Develop customized sponsorship proposals and partnership opportunities. Strengthen organizational visibility and brand awareness throughout the community. Represent the organization at fundraising events, networking opportunities, community meetings, and public engagements. Revenue Tracking & Compliance Oversee tracking and reporting of restricted and unrestricted funds. Ensure proper documentation of pledges, sponsorships, grants, and donations. Monitor fundraising metrics and prepare performance reports for leadership and the Board. Ensure compliance with fundraising regulations, donor restrictions, and ethical fundraising standards. Support audit preparation and donor reporting requirements. Supervise, mentor, and support the Resource Development Coordinator. Establish departmental goals, priorities, and performance standards. Provide coaching, training, and professional development opportunities. Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement. Advanced degree preferred. Experience Minimum of seven (7) years of progressive fundraising or development experience. Demonstrated success securing major gifts, grants, sponsorships, and institutional funding. Experience managing fundraising campaigns and special events. Experience supervising staff and managing revenue goals. Certification & Licenses CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) certification preferred but not required. Other Requirements Strong knowledge of fundraising principles, donor cultivation, and nonprofit development practices. Excellent written, verbal, and presentation skills. Experience with donor management software and CRM systems. Strong project management and organizational skills. Ability to build relationships with donors, sponsors, community leaders, and stakeholders. Ability to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, as needed for events and fundraising activities. Physical Demands The physical demands of this position are consistent with a professional office environment and fundraising event participation. The employee is regularly required to sit, speak, hear, and use hands to operate office equipment. Occasional standing for extended periods, event setup support, walking, bending, and lifting up to 25 pounds may be required. Work Environment Work is performed in both office and community settings. The position requires frequent attendance at fundraising events, networking functions, donor meetings, and community activities. Evening and weekend work is regularly required to support fundraising and engagement efforts.
