Director of Development, Do Good (VPUR)

Job Description Summary Organization's Summary Statement:
The Office of Principal Gifts within University Relations, in close collaboration with the Do Good Institute and the Office of the Provost, seeks to hire an energetic Director of Development, Do Good, to join the team and lead the Do Good fundraising efforts. The Director of Development, Do Good, will lead the fundraising objectives of Do Good Now, which includes being the primary fundraiser for the Do Good Institute and the Do Good Campus, and coordinating discovery prospects across all development units for Do Good Now. They will manage a major gifts portfolio primarily composed of prospects at the $50,000 level and above.

The Director of Development, Do Good, will need to demonstrate critical collaboration skills within this role in several ways. They will be responsible for maintaining a frequent meeting cadence with the Director of the Do Good Institute, Associate Provost for Community Engagement, and within the Office of Principal Gifts in University Relations to formulate and execute integrated development strategies to maximize philanthropic support. Given the wide reach of this role and the University of Maryland’s commitment to Do Good, these strategies will also align with the goals of the Provost, the Do Good Campus Strategic Leadership Council, the Do Good Institute, and the School of Public Policy Development team. Further, collaboration with all UMD academic schools/colleges/units, constituent groups, relevant campus colleagues, faculty and administrators will be essential to the success of the position.

This individual will need to become a subject matter expert on the Do Good Institute, its history and future priorities and goals, as well as strategies UMD has pursued to cement its status as the nation’s first Do Good Campus. Using this knowledge, and the understanding of the University of Maryland’s priorities, they must be able to persuasively discuss academic and experiential programs, philanthropic opportunities and priorities with prospective donors and volunteers.

This position must be able to work evenings and weekends as needed. Frequent local travel, and occasional national travel is required (up to 50%).

Preferences:
-Progressively responsible experience in the field of advancement or related environment with demonstrated success in securing six figure major gifts and seven to eight figure principal gifts, and a deep understanding of the donor lifecycle.
-An appreciation for the University of Maryland's mission and values.
Experience in high-level creative donor discovery outreach to cultivate, solicit, and close gifts in a higher education setting.
-Experience working with university leadership to execute prospect cultivation strategies.
-Experience working collaboratively as a peer on philanthropic gifts within a complex institution, preferably in higher education.

Physical Demands:
-Work is performed in an office environment and requires the ability to operate standard office equipment and keyboards.
-Ability to work some evenings and weekends as necessary
-Local travel approximately 40% of the time
-Out of State Travel approximately 10% of the time

Minimum Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Six (6) years of professional development, fundraising or external relations experience.

Other: The position may or may not involve supervisory responsibilities.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES:

Skill in problem solving and strategic planning.

Skill in oral and written communication.

Skill in the use of Microsoft Office and Google Suite products.

Ability to develop and administer new policies and procedures.

Ability to interpret and apply policies, procedures, regulations, and laws.

Ability to interact with donors and senior-level executives and administrators required.

Ability to handle multiple tasks and strong adherence to deadlines required.
