JOB OPENING CITY OF FARMINGTON JOB POSITION #104: Adult Services Librarian NUMBER OF VACANCIES: 1 DEPARTMENT: Library WORK LOCATION: Farmington Public Library PAY GRADE: J SALARY RANGE: $40,000 - $55,000 annually TYPE OF POSITION: Regular, Full-time DAYS WORKED: Varies HOURS WORKED: Varies APPLICATIONS WILL BE RECEIVED UNTIL: Open Until Filled, 1st Review Date will be Monday, June 22nd, 2026 JOB DUTIES ESSENTIAL DUTIES: Works under the guidance and direction of the Adult Services Coordinator. Plans, coordinates, implements, and evaluates library programs to meet the objectives identified in library planning documents, and community needs, expressed or perceived. Maintains and applies a current knowledge of books, authors, and trends in library services and programs. Provides general and in-depth reference assistance and reader advisory, using a variety of print and online resources. Participates in the development and maintenance of library collections including, but not limited to, books, periodicals, online databases, and media. Responsible for budget requirements for collections as set forth by the Adult Service Coordinator.
Participates in the development of marketing materials for promoting library programs, materials, and services. Participates in the development of policies and standards with regard to collection development and adult services operations. Participates in professional organizations and activities to keep informed of current and emerging trends in public libraries. Plans and provides instruction and training to library staff and patrons, including library outreach programs. Analyzes and interprets data and reports related to various department functions, and makes recommendations to the Adult Services Coordinator. Interprets and enforces library policies and procedures to library staff and the general public.
May monitor the work of Adult Services staff for specific projects, as assigned, such as assisting with evaluating the work performance of Library Associate and Reference Technicians. May be asked to work on specific projects, including but not limited to, maintaining special collections, participating in development of library web pages, maintaining the library's book groups, assisting with cataloging materials, managing the interlibrary loan operations and Government Documents collections. May serve as a member of employee committees, as required and assigned. Represents the library on various community or professional bodies, as required or assigned. Attendance at work is an essential function of this position. Understands and follows written and/or verbal instructions. Must be available to work a varied schedule, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays. Participates and attends staff trainings, daily shows, meetings, programs, and other training sessions of the library. Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City. Complies with Adult Services department and library procedures and policies, and the City's guidelines, rules, regulations, procedures, and policies. QUALIFICATIONS This position is subject to the City's Drug and Alcohol Free Workplace Program which includes: pre-employment testing, post-accident testing, reasonable suspicion testing, return to duty testing, and follow-up testing. Background check is required. This position requires participation in and compliance with the City's Environmental, Health, and Safety Program. Valid New Mexico drivers license with acceptable driving record for the past three years. Must be available to work evenings and weekends. Masters of Library Science Degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Operates a motor vehicle to assist in carrying out the business of the department and the City. Extensive working knowledge of reference resources, in both print and non-print formats. Considerable knowledge of principles and practices common to modern library operations. Excellent oral and written communication skills necessary to work effectively with students, volunteers, and part-time and full-time staff. Ability to understand the technology used at the library, to conduct basic troubleshooting of technology-related issues, and to accurately report issues in a timely manner. Broad practical experience with integrated library systems software and subscription databases. Strong collection development skills required. Working knowledge of the principles and practices of office management, work organization and supervision. Must have the ability to organize, prioritize, and meet deadlines. Time management skills sufficient to organize work. Must have the ability to organize, prioritize, meet deadlines, and meet quality and quantity standards. Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other City personnel, and the general public.
Excellent interpersonal communication skills, to effectively interact with all age levels and cultural and socioeconomic backgrounds. Experience with public speaking and making presentations. Ability to accurately classify and catalog library materials, based upon a thorough knowledge of library collection, classification, and selection tools and techniques.
Ability to perform routine and complex duties as assigned with little or no supervision. Ability to understand verbal and written instructions. Ability to work with frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in work environment.
Ability to use discretion and maintain confidentiality, in accordance with library policies and laws. Proficiency with tools, technology and equipment listed below.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED: Personal computer and applicable software, online subscription databases, automated library management systems (online catalog, self-check, computer reservations, etc.), online event and program applications, electronic devices (such as eReaders, tablets, smart phones, etc.), online applications and social media tools, copier and fax, sound systems and projectors, telephone, and automobile. PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
