Departmental Overview

The Department of Recreation & Wellbeing (RecWell) provides competitive and recreational opportunities for students, faculty, staff, and campus-affiliated community members. In addition to the 30 sports clubs, the department offers a wide range of recreational activities and state-of-the-art equipment.

Position Summary

Serves as Coordinator for Sport Clubs, Esports, Intramural Sports, and Martial Arts, and provides administrative support to the Office of Competitive Sports. This position will predominantly support Sport Club students through advisement and transactions.

Student-led competitive sport programs generate a level of operational complexity, liability exposure, and program support that require regular advisement and oversight within a broader RecWell portfolio. Purchasing, equipment, team travel, home events, high-risk contact sports, national governing body compliance, facility scheduling and allocation, risk management, and student leadership development all converge in this program, requiring a dedicated professional who can provide consistent guidance, support, and institutional accountability to ensure these programs operate safely, equitably, and in alignment with the university's mission and guidance.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates the administration of sports programs to ensure students can plan, organize and control their activities in accordance with university policy.
  • Works with student officers and participants to advise on university policy and support planning of a variety of competitions, events and tournaments.
  • Implements competitive sport programs policies and procedures.
  • Works with department management to update/review/revise website to better communicate organization's mission, requiring substantive knowledge of organization's goals and objectives. Prepares correspondence and other written materials for department management and/or faculty requiring some specialized knowledge of the subject matter. Edits and proofreads written materials for content consistency.
  • Monitors sport club team budgets and makes budget recommendations to the Office of Competitive Sports
  • (OCS) group and supervisor. Supports the collection of dues, revenue and fundraising opportunities and approval of purchases for competitive sports programs.
  • Assists in planning and supervision of competitive sports events and supports on-campus programs and events with sport clubs, Intramurals (IMs), Esports and Martial Arts.
  • Assists with student employee performance reviews and adherence to job standards. Provides guidance and support to student employees.
  • Reports safety issues to appropriate personnel and recommends improvements.
  • Other administrative duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge in administrative procedures and processes including word processing, spreadsheet and database applications.
  • Requires good verbal and written communication skills in the English language, active listening, critical thinking, multi-task and time management skills.
  • Requires interpersonal and work leadership skills to provide guidance to other personnel.
  • Uses creative problem solving to deliver strong service orientation.
  • Proven ability to manage programs, apply sound judgment and be solution oriented. Ability to think critically, and develop original ideas.
  • Client service minded, entrepreneurial spirit and creative thinking.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact effectively with people from diverse backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated leadership and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively across the organization, internally and externally.
  • Proficiency in the use of basic computer applications relevant to job duties.
  • Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of campus policies and procedures.
  • Experience administering sport programming for individuals of varying abilities.
  • Knowledge of IM Leagues, Fusion, and other industry related software programs.
  • Knowledge of program activity and industry best practices.

Under California law, the University of California, Berkeley is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the compensation range for this role and should not offer a salary outside of the range posted in this job announcement. This range takes into account the wide range of factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to experience, skills, knowledge, abilities, education, licensure and certifications, analysis of internal equity, and other business and organizational needs. It is not typical for an individual to be offered a salary at or near the top of the range for a position. Salary offers are determined based on final candidate qualifications and experience.

The budgeted hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position is $30.58 (step 1.0) - $34.30 (step 6.0).

  • This is a full-time (40 hours/week), career position that is eligible for UC Benefits.
  • This is a non-exempt, biweekly-paid position.
