Medical Technologist

Position Summary

Under the guidance of supervisors, the Medical Technologist is responsible for the prompt and accurate performance of assigned laboratory work. This role involves conducting analyses on blood and other body fluids to assist in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The technologist is expected to maintain proficiency across all clinical departments within the laboratory.

Minimum Requirements

Education

• Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Experience

• No previous experience required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities

• Ability to maintain good rapport and communication with all hospital departments, medical staff, patients, fellow employees, and visitors.

License/Certification/Registration

• Certified MT with ASCP, AMT, NCCLS, or equivalent certification.
• Certified MLS with ASCP, AMT, NCCLS, or equivalent certification.

Supervision Received

Receives general supervision from the Medical Director, Manager, Supervisors, and Section Heads.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

• Accurately and efficiently perform assigned duties in accordance with established procedures.
• Utilize proper techniques and equipment in the execution of duties.
• Prepare specimens for processing, ensuring accurate identification and logging of patient information.
• Promptly process and analyze specimens using manual or automated methods to determine results for reporting.
• Ensure all quality control criteria are met before releasing reports; repeat any out-of-control procedures following established protocols.
• Maintain organization in the workplace to minimize confusion and errors.
• Review results for accuracy and completeness before finalizing reports; repeat inconsistent results and request new specimens when necessary.
• Seek assistance from supervisors for any difficulties encountered in identification, interpretation, or processing of specimens.
• Assist with the training of technical personnel and participate in proficiency testing or quality assurance activities as directed.
• Stay informed of laboratory and hospital policies, and demonstrate compliance with safety and infection control procedures.
• Advise supervisors of potential hazards and suggest improvements to laboratory services when appropriate.
• Maintain departmental equipment and supplies, checking instrument performance daily and addressing any issues promptly.
• Assist in the maintenance of a sufficient inventory of reagents and supplies.
• Participate in the implementation and evaluation of new procedures or products.
• Perform specimen collection duties, ensuring accurate patient identification prior to collection.
• Respond promptly to requests for specimen collection and communicate effectively regarding any delays.

Non-Essential Functions

• Perform related and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
• Assist co-workers voluntarily during fluctuating patient care priorities and workload.
