Pediatric Audiology Final Year Externship
American Academy of Audiology
The Audiology Program at Boston Children’s Hospital offers two final-year externships lasting from early June until early May of the following year. Externs will receive approximately 11 months of patient care experience under the supervision of licensed audiology preceptors. Applicants should be driven to pursue a career in pediatric audiology following completion of their tenure at Boston Children’s Hospital. Externs are provided with supervision by a range of experienced pediatric audiologists. All staff hold either the ASHA CCC-A or ABA Board Certification in Audiology, in addition to the Massachusetts state license in audiology. Many staff have the ABA Pediatric Specialty Certificate, Cochlear Implant Specialty Certificate or both. All staff members have completed the Certificate Holder-Audiology Preceptor (CHAP) training program. Supervision from an audiologist with CCC-A is not guaranteed. Externs rotate between two sites in our audiology program. Externs will be exposed to all aspects of pediatric audiological evaluation and case management, including all behavioral audiometry techniques and objective test measures, selection of hearing assistance technology, and determination of educational accommodations for children with hearing loss. The externship year begins with focused training on diagnostic services. Subsequent rotations focus on hearing aid fittings, in‑patient services and cochlear implant mapping. We expect that externs will come with substantial pediatric audiology experience and have basic competence with all behavioral test techniques. Applicants should also have an understanding of and exposure to frequency‑specific threshold ABR assessment on infants and young children. Upon completion of training, we expect the extern to be competent in providing detailed assessment and audiologic case management of complex pediatric patients.
