Type: Full-Time, On-site | Salary Range: $50,000 - $60,000

Position Overview \n

We are seeking a detail-oriented and analytical Staff Accountant to join our team in Kingsport, TN. In this role, you will support the client's overall financial operations, accounting functions, fiscal accountability, and reporting requirements across two partnerships. Beyond standard transactional accounting, the Staff Accountant serves as a key analytical resource for leadership—evaluating financial performance, performing variance and trend analyses, and recommending actionable operational improvements.

Key Responsibilities \n

• General Ledger & Financial Reconciliations: Maintain general ledger accounts for two partnerships; record journal entries, accruals, and adjustments; perform daily/monthly bank and balance sheet reconciliations.
\n
• Accounts Receivable & Client Billing: Process client payments, maintain AR balances, monitor collections performance, assist with monthly billing, and resolve discrepancies alongside attorneys and leadership.
\n
• Accounts Payable & Expense Management: Manage full-cycle AP for multi-entity operations; verify invoices, administer corporate credit cards (~24 cardholders), and analyze vendor spending patterns for cost-saving opportunities.
\n
• Payroll & Benefits Administration: Prepare and submit bi-weekly payroll; manage PTO accruals; process 401(k) contributions and loan repayments while ensuring strict confidentiality.
\n
• Partner & Executive Accounting: Calculate, reconcile, and process partner distributions, departure settlements, and contracted attorney payments.
\n
• Real Estate Closing Disbursements: Coordinate real estate transaction disbursements, verifying documentation, payees, and adherence to legal trust accounting safeguards.
\n
• Financial Reporting & Business Insight: Prepare monthly/annual financial packages (Attorney Productivity, Paralegal Utilization, Partnership Profitability, and Cash Flow). Evaluate financial performance against budgets, identify trends, investigate root causes, and present actionable recommendations to leadership.

• Tax Prep & CPA Coordination: Coordinate with external CPA firms for annual tax filings, 1099 processing, and external financial reviews.
\n
• Internal Controls & Process Improvement: Maintain strict financial compliance and internal controls; safeguard confidential records; proactively optimize accounting workflows.

Qualifications & Requirements \n

\n

\n
• Education: Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and directly relevant experience).
\n
• Core Accounting: Demonstrated experience in general ledger accounting, AP/AR, bank reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
\n
• Technical Proficiency: Strong proficiency in Microsoft Excel (formulas, reconciliations, financial modeling) and accounting/billing software.
\n
• Analytical Skills: Strong problem-solving skills with experience analyzing budget variances, operational metrics, and financial trends.
\n
• Communication & Ethics: Excellent written/verbal communication skills, exceptional attention to detail, high professional ethics, and discreet handling of confidential data.

Preferred Qualifications \n

\n

\n
• 2+ years of progressively responsible accounting experience.
\n
• Prior accounting experience within a law firm or professional services environment.
\n
• Familiarity with legal billing systems, attorney productivity tracking, and multi-partnership accounting.
\n
• Advanced Excel skills (PivotTables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, financial dashboards).
\n
• CPA designation or active progress toward CPA/CMA certification is a plus.
