Nuclear Medicine Technologist - EDRP Eligible

Summary This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan payment reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VA policy and submit the EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval – award amount (up to $200,000) and eligibility period (one to five years) are determined by the VA Education Loan Repayment Services program office after review of the application. Former EDRP participants are not eligible to apply. Basic Requirements United States citizenship; non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification in nuclear medicine technology by the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) or the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (N). Certification eligibility typically satisfied by completion of an NMTCB‑recognized or JRCNMT‑accredited nuclear medicine technology program, culminating in a certificate, associate, baccalaureate, or master’s degree. Structured clinical training sufficient to provide clinical competency in radiation safety, instrumentation, clinical procedures, and radio‑pharmacy as deemed acceptable by the NMTCB. Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected, but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Temporary appointment as a graduate NMT may be granted for non‑certified applicants meeting eligibility, under authority of 38 U.S.C. §7405(a)(1)(D); failure to obtain certification within one year of appointment justifies termination. Once certified, NMTs must maintain full, valid, and unrestricted certification; loss of credential results in removal from the GS‑0601 NMT occupation and possible termination. Applicants must demonstrate knowledge‑skills‑abilities such as documenting radiation exposure, explaining safety precautions, troubleshooting equipment, and analyzing technical data; evidence may be submitted on resumes or as supporting documents. Creditable experience must have been earned after passing NMTCB or ARRT (N) certification exams, including prior graduate NMT work. Physical requirements are outlined in VA Directive and Handbook 5019. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS‑9. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected is GS‑9. Duties This is an open continuous announcement and will remain open until August 14 2026. Cut‑off date for referral of eligible applications is May 29 2026; applications submitted after this date may not receive consideration. The position serves as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist (NMT) in the Diagnostic Services Patient Care Center at the James J. Peters Bronx VA Medical Center. Provide quality diagnostic and therapeutic nuclear medicine procedures – including scans, blood cell labeling, and thyroid uptake studies – under the supervision of a Nuclear Medicine Physician. Serve as staff NMTs at the journey level; have a full understanding of receipt, use, storage, and disposal of radioactive material. Perform and evaluate daily, weekly, monthly, and quarterly quality control on all imaging and non‑imaging instrumentation.
