Clinical Assistant II (Medical Assistant) – Dermatology The Kimberly and Eric J. Waldman Department of Dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai is dedicated to delivering superior, comprehensive dermatologic care that exceeds patient expectations, and to advancing the science of dermatology through research and education. From preparing the next generation of leaders, to providing cutting-edge and cost‑effective treatment, the Department of Dermatology thrives on a passion to improve the lives of patients through science. The Clinical Assistant II (Medical Assistant) is a senior level clinician who provides clinical and administrative support to physicians and surgeons. This individual coordinates patient care by serving as a liaison between physicians, patients, families, internal/external healthcare providers, home‑care providers and insurance companies. The Clinical Assistant II is expected to support one or more physician and surgeon and should demonstrate a comfort level with high‑volume practice(s), with the possibility of multi‑site travel. This individual mentors and trains less experienced Medical Assistant and Clinical Assistant staff and may act in a lead capacity. Responsibilities Serve as a liaison between physicians, patients, families, healthcare providers, nursing homes, home‑care providers, patient employers and insurance companies to ensure quality patient care for patients seen on campus and off‑site satellite offices. Coordinate, and function in a lead role, the daily activities of the physician team staff to ensure an effective and efficient daily operations flow. Assume responsibility for Medical Assistant schedules and may travel to various sites depending on the needs of the physician/surgeon. Perform patient care responsibilities such as checking schedules, organizing patient flow, accompanying patients to exam/procedure rooms, assisting with walking, transferring, dressing, collecting and processing specimens and point‑of‑care testing, preparing for exam, etc.; assist physicians and surgeons with procedures, take vital signs, relay instructions to patients or families, answer calls and provide pertinent information. Perform clerical responsibilities such as sending and receiving patient medical records; obtaining lab/x‑ray reports, hospital notes, referral information, etc. Complete forms and requisitions as needed, manage charts to ensure information is completed and filed appropriately using the electronic medical record (EMR) system, database or manually as necessary. Coordinate all referrals from multiple sources to ensure proper transition of care; communicate with referring physicians regarding appointment status; ensure post‑care communication; provide monthly reporting of all referrals. Manage physician referrals from various sources in relation to their respective providers; coordinate multidisciplinary appointments. Assure appropriate appointment scheduling based on diagnosis; coordinate multi‑specialty visits, perform and assure appropriate surgical scheduling, including co‑surgeon participation as appropriate to the department. Inventories, order or re‑stock medical supplies as applicable. Set up examination rooms and instruments in accordance with proper sterilization techniques established by hospital and infection‑control policies. Maintain logging systems required for refrigeration of medications, point‑of‑care testing, sterilization process, crash cart or others as needed; check expiration dates on all medications and medical supplies and dispose appropriately per institution policy. Maintain a safe, secure, and healthy work environment by following standards and procedures and in compliance with legal regulations. Comply with established personal protective equipment requirements necessary for protection against exposure to blood and other potentially infectious body fluids, chemical disinfectants, radiation and other hazardous substances. May be required to perform proficient phlebotomy duties. Demonstrate proficiency in updating patient demographic and insurance information; assist in the maintenance of medical charts (filing, operative reports, test results, home‑care forms). May check and verify and update insurance information using internal or web sources; may perform and verify pre‑certification for procedures as necessary. Provide training and mentoring to Medical Assistant I and II and non‑senior Clinical Assistant staff. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications High School Diploma/GED; completion of an approved Medical Assistant certificate course of study from an approved school. 5+ years of experience as a Medical Assistant in a busy practice is preferred. BCLS certification required (Issuing Authority: AHA).
