Senior AccountantThe Senior Accountant for the Texas Access to Justice Foundation performs a broad range of professional accounting functions, including maintaining financial records, preparing and analyzing financial reports, and supporting compliance with applicable accounting standards and organizational policies. Working with a high degree of independence, the position applies sound judgment and analysis to provide accuracy of financial information. The role provides guidance and oversight to accounting staff through work review, knowledge sharing, and process improvement.This position is responsible for managing key accounting processes, preparing GAAP and GASB compliant financial statements, supporting grant and fund accounting activities, conducting grantee reviews and analyzing financial results. Success is reflected in strong internal controls, accurate financial reporting, and responsible stewardship of financial resources.Primary FunctionsAnalyze, prepare, review, and record financial transactions to ensure accuracy, proper coding, and compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB)Manage the monthly close process, including preparation of journal entries, accruals, and deferralsMaintain and reconcile the general ledger and sub-ledgers, ensuring completeness and accuracyPerform balance sheet reconciliations and resolve discrepancies in a timely mannerPrepare and maintain supporting schedules, including trial balance and workpapersMaintain and track restricted, unrestricted, and program-specific fundsRecord and monitor grant revenues and expenses by individual programPrepare grant payment requests and support disbursement processingAssist with time tracking and cost allocation for grant reimbursement purposesAccount for investment activity, including interest income, fair value adjustments, and amortizationManage lease accounting, including right-of-use assets and related liabilitiesPrepare and record journal entries and ensure proper documentationConduct 10-15 annual financial desk reviews of granteesAssess compliance with grant requirements, policies, and applicable regulationsReview financial records, internal controls, audit reports, and supporting documentationIdentify, document, and communicate findings and recommendationsOversee all accounts payable and receivable functions, including invoice processing, collections, and disbursementsManage cash receipts, bank transactions, and reconciliationsEnsure timely and accurate recording of all transactions in the appropriate accounting periodProvide guidance and review the work of junior accounting staff to ensure accuracy and adherence to established procedures and accounting standardsMaintain and strengthen internal controls and accounting processesSupport audit preparation and external reporting requirementsPerform other related duties as assignedPosition RequirementsBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field5+ years of progressive accounting experienceStrong knowledge of GAAP and accrual-based accountingExperience managing full-cycle accounting responsibilities independentlyProficiency in accounting systems and Microsoft ExcelStrong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skillsHigh attention to detail and ability to manage multiple prioritiesEffective written and verbal communication skillsPreferredExperience with nonprofit, fund, or grant accountingFamiliarity with investment accounting and lease accounting standardsCPA certification or progress toward certificationExperience conducting financial reviews, audits, or compliance assessmentsPrior experience in a small team or single-accounting environment
