Teacher Assistant / Bus Driver at Banoak Elementary (26-27 SY) Starting Date: Aug 10, 2026 Job Title: Teacher Assistant/Bus Driver FLSA Status: Non-Exempt Benefits Status: Full-Time, 8 Hours/Day Salary Range (Hourly): $15.60 – $18.39 (Based on Experience) General Statement of Job Teacher Assistant Under limited supervision of the teacher and/or principal, provides support to the teacher in the instruction of students. Performs tasks to support the teacher in the teaching‑learning process for students. Reports to the teacher and/or principal. Bus Driver Under general supervision, work includes driving the bus safely to destination and return, following school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes, and monitoring students’ behavior while they are riding on the bus. Duties and Responsibilities Essential Job Functions: Teacher Assistant Academic Assistance: Gives group instruction as prescribed by teacher; provides individualized instruction; demonstrates various instructional activities; monitors work assigned by teacher; checks and corrects students’ work while in progress; keeps students on task; praises and reinforces achievement of students; reports student progress to teacher. Instructional Preparation/Support: Serves as substitute teacher; arranges classroom furnishings and equipment; duplicates materials; reorganizes materials at end of day; serves as proctor during testing; attends workshops; scores papers as instructed; distributes and collects instructional materials. Reports and Records: Records student behavior; files data according to regulatory requirements; assists teacher in filling out required paperwork. Monitoring Student Behavior: Supervises students in classroom and other locations; creates and distributes awards for positive behavior; promotes student self‑esteem; teaches citizenship, social skills and respect for others; reconciles minor student conflicts; participates in development of discipline policy; disciplines misbehavior through approved methods; reports discipline problems to teacher or principal; reports to supervisor significant change or lack of change in student behavior. Essential Job Functions: Bus Driver Drives bus safely to destination and return; conforms to traffic rules and regulations; makes vehicle pre‑checks, records and reports malfunctions; follows school district regulations for handling vehicle breakdowns and accident incidents; keeps the bus clean. Follows school district procedures when driving assigned bus routes; picks up and drops off students at designated times and bus stops; ensures students depart the bus at their usual stops; ensures all students leave the bus at both ends of the route. Monitors students’ behavior while riding on the bus; takes suitable action to resolve incidents between/among students; reports inappropriate student behavior to school authorities promptly. Responsible for safety of others; considerable responsibility for safe transportation of students. Minimum Training and Experience High School Diploma with additional requirements below. Teacher Assistant Minimum 48 hours of college‑level coursework. Minimum GPA of 2.0 or WorkKeys Certification including Business Writing. Two years of experience working with children preferred, or any equivalent combination of education, training and experience. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with parents, schools, community and district office personnel. Willingness to undergo further training as required. Experience using the computer. Bus Driver 5 years of responsible driving experience. Completion of the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles Bus Driver Training Course. Must be able to pass required DOT Physical examination and have a DOT Drug Screen with negative results. Must be eligible to hold a Commercial Drivers License with Passenger Endorsement. Minimum Qualifications or Standards Required Physical Requirements: Must be physically able to lift and move objects related to the job functions. Light work. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Teacher Assistant Working knowledge of effective methods of dealing with children. Working knowledge of core subjects and Spanish language at designated grade levels. Some knowledge of school organization and community. Some knowledge of expected behavior of children. Skills to operate audiovisual equipment and common office machines; create learning aids. Understand teacher-designed strategies and apply them. Discern significant student behavior and refer to supervisor. Apply proper methods of recognition, reward, and punishment impartially. Solve independent minor problems. Follow written and oral instructions without constant supervision. Maintain confidentiality of student information. Bus Driver Knowledge of driving laws and regulations. Knowledge of safe bus operations. Knowledge of vehicle pre‑run checks. Maintain records of student names, routes, stops, and times. Administer policies and procedures regarding transportation, discipline. Communicate with students, parents, and transportation department. Leadership to maintain discipline on bus. Manual and mechanical skills to maintain bus cleanliness and detect malfunctions. Plan seating arrangements and count students.
