Lab Technician

What we are looking for: The Lab Tech is instrumental in providing a variety of support functions that are critical in assisting the Lab Manager and helping ensure smooth operations of the lab. The Lab Tech functions as an integral and collaborative member of the healthcare team, displaying professional behavior and communicating effectively with others. The Lab Tech must demonstrate competency in all skills related to macroscopic and microscopic tissue processing and is responsible for ensuring lab support is appropriately met by performing the following duties. What you’ll do: Receive, organize, and prepare patient tissue samples for macroscopic evaluation by the Grossing Technician, including confirming patient identity, accessioning specimens, and correctly labeling specimen blocks. Assist with gross entry by entering information provided by the Grossing Technician into the patient’s electronic medical record. Receive, organize, and prepare patient tissue samples for microscopic evaluation by the Dermatopathologist, including correctly labeling completed slides, packaging slides, and sending out slides. Assist with laboratory send-outs, including slide and block requests. Maintain general lab upkeep, such as slide and block organization and storage, and maintain CLIA‑required records and documentation. Complete and maintain all compliance‑related paperwork, including temperature and humidity logs, chemical reagent log sheets, patient information logs, and quality assurance forms. Adhere to all safety protocols. Provide excellent customer service by greeting patients in person or on the telephone, answering inquiries, and providing appropriate referrals. Accurately and timely complete documentation using both the Electronic Medical Record and any required paper documentation while ensuring patient confidentiality. Dispose of blood/body fluids, biohazard materials, needle containers, and potentially infectious waste according to infection control guidelines. Monitor expiration dates and take action accordingly; recognize usage trends affecting unit supplies and make recommendations for adjustments. Participate in staff meetings and workgroups, providing constructive input for practice improvements and solutions. Perform other duties as assigned. It’ll help to have/be: Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and ability to work with an Electronic Health Record and related E‑Systems. High school diploma or GED. Prior anatomic pathology laboratory experience preferred but not required. Detail‑oriented and able to handle multiple tasks, following through to completion. Self‑learning mentality, actively seeking resources to meet learning needs. Reliable, on‑site attendance as scheduled by supervisor. Strong interpersonal skills, maintaining positive relationships with patients, families, peers, vendors, and team members. Qualifications/Experience: High school diploma or GED. Prior anatomic pathology laboratory experience preferred but not required. Preferred: Associate degree in laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent combination of training and education. Ideally 60 semester credit hours, including: 6 semester credit hours of chemistry 6 semester credit hours of biology 12 semester credit hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination Work Environment and Physical Requirements: The medical office, procedure/exam room, and laboratory environment may include exposure to communicable diseases, bloodborne pathogens, biohazards or toxic substances. Daily activities may include standing, walking, sitting, bending and lifting items up to 30 lbs.
