Vice President of Finance

Starting pay of $100,000 - $110,000 plus bonus
Job Summary
The Vice President of Finance is a key member of the senior leadership team and provides strategic financial leadership, oversight, and direction to further the mission of Habitat for Humanity of Kansas City through sound, ethical, and sustainable financial management.
The Vice President of Finance is responsible for the overall financial health, integrity, and stewardship of the organization, including financial planning and analysis, accounting, budgeting, cash flow management, financial reporting, internal controls, risk management, insurance, grant and restricted-fund compliance, data management, information technology oversight, and organizational business operations.
Essential Functions
Strategic Financial Leadership
- Partner with the President/CEO and Board of Directors to establish, recommend, and implement the organization's long-term financial strategies, objectives, policies, and operating procedures.
- Serve as a strategic financial advisor to the President/CEO, senior leadership team, Board of Directors, and Finance Committee, providing timely analysis, recommendations, and insight regarding the organization's financial position and future direction.
- Communicate financial policies, expectations, and objectives to staff and oversee effective implementation.
Financial Planning, Budgeting & Reporting
- Direct the development, preparation, monitoring, and administration of the organization's annual operating budget and long-range financial projections.
- Prepare, or direct the preparation of, timely financial reports, forecasts, analyses, and dashboards that accurately communicate organizational performance and financial position.
- Monitor income, expenses, depreciation, homeowner/lessee payments, cash flow, investments, and other financial activities to identify trends, opportunities, and potential risks.
- Monitor actual financial performance against approved budgets and forecasts and recommend corrective action when appropriate.
Audit, Internal Controls & Compliance
- Lead and oversee the organization's comprehensive annual financial audit, serving as the primary organizational contact with the external accounting firm and coordinating all aspects of the audit process.
- Ensure the organization is audit-ready throughout the year by maintaining accurate financial records, appropriate supporting documentation, effective internal controls, and compliance with applicable accounting standards, laws, regulations, grant requirements, and organizational policies.
- Coordinate the preparation and submission of audit schedules, supporting documentation, reconciliations, financial statements, and other information requested by external auditors.
- Review audit findings and recommendations with the President/CEO, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors and develop, implement, and monitor corrective action plans as appropriate.
- Maintain strong internal control systems designed to safeguard organizational assets, prevent and detect fraud, ensure financial accuracy, and promote accountability.
- Periodically evaluate financial processes, controls, and procedures and recommend improvements to strengthen efficiency, transparency, and risk management.
- Ensure compliance with applicable nonprofit accounting requirements and maintain current knowledge of relevant financial, tax, regulatory, and accounting standards.
Grant & Restricted Funding Compliance
- Provide accounting and internal controls oversight of all grant, restricted-fund, and other designated funding compliance requirements.
- Ensure appropriate accounting, tracking, documentation, reporting, and stewardship of restricted funds.
- Collaborate with program and development teams to ensure financial commitments and reporting requirements are accurately documented and fulfilled.
Board & Finance Committee Leadership
- Serve as the primary staff liaison to the Board of Directors' Finance Committee.
- Prepare and present financial information, forecasts, budgets, financial analyses, and recommendations for Board and committee review.
Banking, Insurance & Risk Management
- Establish and maintain strong professional relationships with banks, financial institutions, donors, insurance providers, auditors, accounting professionals, tax and legal advisors, and other external partners.
- Direct the evaluation, negotiation, and administration of organizational insurance coverage.
- Ensure appropriate documentation and processes are maintained to mitigate organizational financial and operational risk.
Habitat for Humanity Compliance
- Provide oversight of organizational compliance with applicable Habitat for Humanity International requirements, standards, policies, reporting obligations, and financial practices.
- Monitor changes in applicable Habitat requirements and coordinate implementation of necessary organizational policies or practices.
Technology & Data Management
- Provide strategic oversight of the organization's financial systems, data management, and information technology functions.
- Oversee the organization's IT vendor relationship and ensure appropriate technology support for the Habitat KC team.
- Promote effective, secure, and efficient financial and business systems that support organizational operations, reporting, data integrity, and decision-making.
- Ensure appropriate controls and safeguards are in place for financial and organizational data.
Leadership & Team Management
- Provide effective leadership, supervision, coaching, and professional development to direct reports.
- Establish clear performance expectations, accountability measures, and priorities for the finance and business functions.
- Partner effectively with senior leadership, staff, volunteers, Board members, external advisors, vendors, and community partners.
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the President/CEO.

The Successful Candidate Will Demonstrate
- Exceptional financial leadership, judgment, integrity, and accountability.
- Strong knowledge of nonprofit financial management, accounting principles, budgeting, financial reporting, internal controls, and regulatory compliance.
- Strong strategic planning and problem-solving skills with the ability to anticipate financial risks and opportunities.
- Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, deadlines, and projects in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to work independently, exercise sound judgment, take initiative, and make informed decisions.
Qualifications, Education & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field required; significant directly related professional experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
- Master's degree, CPA, or other relevant professional certification preferred.
- Minimum of five years of progressively responsible accounting and financial management experience, with demonstrated leadership responsibility.
- Demonstrated knowledge of current accounting principles, nonprofit financial reporting requirements, tax regulations, financial laws, and other applicable rules and regulations.
- Demonstrated experience with annual financial audits, internal controls, budgeting, financial forecasting, compliance, and financial reporting.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and QuickBooks required.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Individual may be subject to intermittent moderate noise levels.
Travel
Travel is primarily local during the business day, although some evening and weekend meetings may be required. Outside events, meetings and presentations may also be required.
