CNC Machinist – 2nd Shift

Join a precision machining team where you will operate and set up various shop machinery, primarily focused on machining metal materials. In this role, you will run CNC and manual equipment, edit existing programs, and use blueprints to produce parts to exact specifications. The work is highly repetitive and centers on drilling holes in cold-rolled steel, making it ideal for someone who is comfortable with routine tasks and has a solid understanding of machining programs and machine setup.

Responsibilities

• Operate a variety of shop machinery with a primary focus on machining metal materials, including cold-rolled steel.
• Run CNC lathes and mills (vertical and horizontal) to produce parts according to engineering blueprints and specifications.
• Edit and adjust CNC programs, including G-code, to ensure parts meet dimensional and quality requirements.
• Set up CNC machines and manual machines, including tooling selection, fixture setup, and proper alignment of workpieces.
• Use blueprints to program and define exactly what needs to be made, particularly on lathes and multi-axis mills.
• Perform repetitive drilling operations on cold-rolled steel while maintaining consistency, accuracy, and efficiency.
• Work with 3-axis and 5-axis CNC mills, ensuring proper configuration and operation for each job.
• Operate equipment that may include Fanuc, Yamaha, Haas, and other CNC controls and machinery.
• Conduct machine setups for both CNC and manual machines, verifying that tools, offsets, and programs are correct before production.
• Measure and inspect parts using calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring tools to confirm adherence to tolerances.
• Monitor machines during operation and make necessary adjustments to programs, tooling, or setup to maintain quality and throughput.
• Maintain a clean and organized work area, following shop safety procedures and equipment handling guidelines.
• Collaborate with team members and supervisors to prioritize work orders and meet production schedules on 2nd shift.
• Perform basic troubleshooting on machining issues, such as surface finish, dimensional deviations, or tooling wear.
• Document work as required, including recording measurements, setup details, and any program changes made during production.

Essential Skills

• Proven lathe experience, including setup, operation, and basic programming.
• Ability to read and interpret blueprints and translate them into machining programs and setups.
• Hands-on experience with CNC machining, including lathes and vertical/horizontal mills.
• Familiarity with 3-axis and 5-axis CNC milling operations.
• Ability to edit and work with G-code and other CNC programming languages.
• Experience with machine setup, including tooling, fixtures, and workpiece alignment.
• Proficiency using precision measuring tools such as calipers and micrometers.
• Comfort with repetitive machining tasks, especially drilling operations in cold-rolled steel.
• Basic knowledge of machining processes, tooling, and metalworking practices.
• Capability to work the 2nd shift schedule from 4PM to 12PM/1AM

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Experience operating CNC machines with Fanuc, Yamaha, and Haas controls.
• Experience in both CNC and manual machining environments.
• Knowledge of vertical and horizontal milling operations.
• Familiarity with tooling selection and optimization for drilling and milling.
• Experience working with multi-axis (3-axis and 5-axis) milling machines.
• Ability to perform machine setup on various equipment, including lathes and mills.
• Comfort working in a production-focused environment with consistent, repetitive tasks.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to producing accurate, high-quality parts.

Work Environment

The role is based in a climate-controlled, indoor facility consisting of two large buildings dedicated to welding, machining, and assembly operations. You will work on 2nd shift from 4PM to 12PM/1AM in a well-organized shop environment equipped with CNC and manual machines, including lathes and vertical/horizontal mills, as well as multi-axis equipment. The workspace is designed for comfort and safety, with modern machining centers, precision measuring tools, and a production-focused layout that supports efficient workflows.

Job Type & Location

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of OLATHE, KS.

Pay and Benefits

The pay range for this position is $25.00 - $29.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
