The City of Hemet is seeking motivated, creative, and service-oriented students interested in gaining hands‑on experience in local government. This internship offers a unique opportunity to work directly with the City Manager’s Office on projects that impact economic development, strategic planning, communications, public policy, and City operations. Interns will develop professional skills while contributing to initiatives that improve the quality of life for the Hemet community. Assignments are part‑time, limited duration, not exceeding 1,000 hours per year. A typical schedule is 15-25 hours per week depending on academic schedules and department needs. The City Manager’s Office serves as the administrative leadership of the City and works closely with the Mayor, City Council, City departments, businesses, and community organizations to implement Council priorities and deliver municipal services. Interns will gain exposure to executive management, public policy, economic development, budgeting, strategic planning, communications, city events, and special projects. Performs a wide variety of administrative, project‑related, and department‑specific assignments in order to receive on‑the‑job exposure to municipal government processes, projects, programs, and issues. Performs basic technical assignments in area of specialization. Performs a variety of administrative and/or technical tasks in support of City programs; answers phones and assists the public. Researches, writes, and presents reports and recommendations on a variety of municipal government topics. Assists in the coordination of data and materials for the department. Verifies and reviews forms and reports for completeness and conformance with established regulations and procedures; applies departmental policies and procedures in determining completeness of applications, records, and files. Makes copies; collates materials; files copies of letters, memoranda, reports, and other materials in department and/or central files; maintains a variety of records and files. Knowledge: Office administration practices and procedures. Correct English usage, including spelling, grammar and punctuation. City organization, functions and procedures applicable to assigned areas of responsibility. Records management, record keeping, filing and basic purchasing procedures. Basic practices and terminology used in department or division. Research and report preparation methods and procedures. Ability: Learn basic principles of municipal government management. Learn, interpret, and apply developmental policies and procedures. Operate a computer using word processing, spreadsheet, database and other business software. Operate other standard office equipment. Type accurately at a speed necessary to meet the requirements of the position. Organise work. Read basic documents. Organise and maintain office and specialised files. Communicate clearly and effectively orally and in writing. Understand and follow written and oral instructions. Enter and prepare clear and accurate data for records and reports. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City managers, staff, the public and others encountered in the course of work. Education and Experience: Student Intern I: Applicants must be enrolled in a high school academic or vocational curriculum. Applicants under 18 years of age must secure a work permit. Applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 while interning. Additional minimum qualifications may apply depending upon the internship. Student Intern II: Graduation from high school or G.E.D. equivalent with current enrollment in college courses at an accredited college or university. Undergraduate students must be enrolled in at least 12 semester / 15 quarter units. Graduate students must be enrolled in at least 6 semester / 9 quarter units. Applicants must maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 while interning. Additional minimum qualifications may apply depending upon the internship. Preferred fields of study: Public Administration Business Administration Political Science Economics Urban Planning Communications Finance Engineering Certification/License and/or Other Special Requirements: A valid California driver’s licence and the ability to maintain insurability under the City’s vehicle insurance policy may be required depending upon the internship assignment. Selection Process All properly completed applications will be reviewed and the most appropriately qualified individuals will be invited to continue in the selection process. The process may include any combination of a written exam, oral board interview, and/or skills assessment to further evaluate job‑related qualifications. Candidates who successfully complete the selection process will be placed on an eligibility list which will remain valid for a minimum of six months. Note: Prospective employees will undergo, and must successfully pass, a background reference check (including fingerprinting) and a medical examination.
