About the Role

The Company is seeking a General Counsel & Chief Legal Officer to serve as its primary advisor on governance, risk management, compliance, and legal affairs. This senior executive role is pivotal in providing strategic legal leadership, overseeing global operations, and ensuring the organization's mission is supported by a strong legal and governance framework. The successful candidate will be responsible for a wide range of legal matters, including but not limited to, nonprofit governance, employment, regulatory compliance, contracts, intellectual property, data privacy, and international activities. They will also be tasked with managing the legal department, budget, and external legal counsel, as well as leading enterprise compliance programs and supporting risk management initiatives. Applicants for this role at the company should have a Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school, active membership in at least one U.S. state bar, and a minimum of 15 years of progressive legal experience, with a focus on non-profit governance and compliance, corporate law, and international operations. The ideal candidate will be a strategic thinker, with exceptional judgment, and the ability to balance legal risk with organizational objectives. They must be a self-starter, capable of operating independently in a global environment, and possess excellent interpersonal and facilitation skills. Experience in managing outside counsel, complex legal matters, and a strong background in emerging regulatory issues, particularly in the areas of data privacy and cybersecurity, are essential. The role also requires a trusted advisor with a strong executive presence, who is mission-aligned, and committed to the values of intercultural exchange and education.
