A confidential California-based defense litigation practice is seeking an Associate Attorney with 2 to 5 years of workers’ compensation defense experience to support a busy, statewide practice. This role offers hands-on litigation responsibility, direct exposure to hearings and case strategy, and a clearly defined path for career progression, including an established partner track.

THE ROLE

• Manage a high-volume workers’ compensation defense caseload (approximately 70 matters)

• Draft and review pleadings and other litigation filings

• Handle discovery, including written discovery and document review

• Prepare for and attend workers’ compensation hearings and related proceedings

• Evaluate exposure, develop case strategy, and support resolution through negotiation when appropriate

• Communicate with clients and other stakeholders on case status, strategy, and next steps

• Use an electronic case management system to track deadlines, workflow, and correspondence

Los Angeles area, California

Schedule:

Hybrid (in office 2 days per week) or fully remote options, based on candidate preference

REQUIREMENTS

• 2 to 5 years of workers’ compensation defense experience

• Active California Bar admission in good standing

• Juris Doctor from an accredited law school

• Ability to manage deadlines and independently run a high caseload

• Strong legal writing, organization, and client communication skills

• Comfort working in an electronic case management environment

PREFERRED BACKGROUND

• Experience in the San Francisco Bay Area, Fresno, or Santa Monica markets

• Interest in practice development; attorneys who generate work through their own contacts can receive additional hourly compensation

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

• Bonus structure: $1,000 for meeting 225 billable hours per month, plus $40 per additional hour
