Position:  Nursing Instructor
Department: Nursing LPN
Reports To: Program Chair/Director of Nursing

Position Summary
The Nursing Instructor provides competent students with instruction of the highest standards, evaluate student progress, assist in preparation of syllabi, assist in activities furthering the work of the institution, communicate necessary information to students, provide academic advice to students as needed and serve on standing and ad hoc committees as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities

Teaching and Advising:

• Provide competent instruction in the clinical and theoretical areas of nursing
• Maintain high standards and promote excellence in education
• Participate in and contribute to the team-teaching of classroom and clinical courses and model team-enhancing behavior for students
• Serve as a role model for students in professional interaction with other health workers and with clinical facilities
• Collect, record, maintain, and submit accurate class records including grades, absences, withdrawal and/or class drop information to appropriate offices
• Prepare or assist in the preparation of materials such as those used in academic administration when requested, including course syllabi, program outlines, articulation, and Catalog materials and participate in scheduled in-service activities
• Promote student development through enrichment and mentoring experiences
• Serve as academic advisor and mentor
• Evaluate the progress of students in all classes according to institutional, divisional, departmental, and individual criteria

Supervisory / Management:

• Promote positive and productive relationships with service area hospitals, clinics, businesses, industries, and agencies
• Assist the Director of Nursing in scheduling and confirming use of clinical sites
• Assist the Director of Nursing in scheduling curriculum content and classroom scheduling
• Maintain relationships with clinical sites and professional peers that support the reputation of the College and the Practical Nursing Program
• Be prompt and punctual in reporting for work, in meeting classes, and in keeping office hours
• Maintain attendance records for clinical groups and for classes taught and turn these records into the Nursing office promptly
• Continue as competent faculty in nursing by seeking new knowledge, improving teaching skills, and updating professional competencies

Curriculum Development and Management:

• Provide advice to the Director of Nursing and Dean of Nursing and Allied Health on matters pertaining to the instructional program
• Become familiar with institutional policies and procedures as outlined in the College Catalog, Faculty Handbook, and Nursing Handbook and follow such policies and procedures
• Assist in the review and assessment of student learning in the Nursing program

Engagement Activities:

• Serve on Division, College and Nursing Staff committees as needed
• Continue as competent faculty in nursing by seeking new knowledge, improving teaching skills, and updating professional competencies

Required Education & Experience

• Associate’s degree in Nursing
• Valid, unencumbered Registered Nurse (RN) license eligible to practice in Louisiana
• Three (3) years of nursing experience, including at least one (1) year as a medical-surgical hospital staff nurse providing direct patient care
• Practice as a nurse for at least six (6) full-time months within the three years preceding application
• Approval by the Louisiana State Board of Practical Nurse Examiners prior to hire

Preferred Education & Experience

• Bachelor’s or higher degree in Nursing
• Prior teaching experience in a clinical or classroom setting
