Licensed Professional Counselor

Chief Objective of Position The Department of Counseling Services is seeking a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) to assist students in defining and accomplishing personal and academic goals, providing counseling—including on‑call crisis intervention—and supporting students’ development and success at the university. Responsibilities Provide individual and group counseling, consultation, and outreach focused on developmental needs and issues of students. Provide on‑call crisis counseling and intervention support to students in need. Provide psycho‑education about anxiety, depression, stress, emotional regulation, relationships, eating concerns, substance abuse, sexual assault, and other topics concerning student welfare. Support student adjustment and learning in the residence hall through outreach and educational programs and services. Support training of the campus community on suicide awareness, appropriate referral, listening skills, conflict management, and crisis intervention. Provide consulting services as needed regarding student issues related to counseling, development, and behavior management in the residential community. Maintain professional customer service and relationships with students, faculty, staff, administrators, employees, and community members, demonstrating a positive and respectful attitude. Follow workplace safety regulations and adhere to applicable standards, processes, and programs established for the position. Ensure workplace safety and reduce work‑related absence through communication of safety issues. Perform additional duties assigned by the Executive Director to support office functions and services. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Strong abilities in counseling, crisis response, outreach programming, and communication. Knowledge of individual and group counseling theory and practice. Skills in providing individual and group counseling. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Required Education Master’s degree in counseling, counselor education, social work, or clinical or counseling psychology by the start date, with coursework and training in individual and group counseling, crisis response, psychological assessment, personality theories, abnormal psychology or psychopathology, ethical practice standards, and substance abuse prevention. Must be currently licensed or license‑eligible; if not licensed, the requirement is to obtain Virginia licensure within one year of hire. Experience Experience in providing individual or group counseling. Experience in crisis counseling and intervention, including on‑call response and emergency hospitalization procedures. Experience counseling special populations at risk for suicide, victims of sexual assault, and substance abuse. Experience working in a university counseling center. Salary Starting at $58,519 to $80,464, commensurate with education and experience.
