Job Description AXIS is seeking a Head of Specialty Complex Claims to join the North America Claims team. The role reports directly to the Head of North America Claims and leads a sophisticated team that handles complex claims across casualty, commercial property, financial & professional lines, program claims, Canada claims, and A&H claims. The position also serves as a resource for international counterparts on domestic coverage issues and litigation. The responsibilities include: Directly managing claims involving complex coverage issues, including investigation, analysis, and evaluation of coverage liability and damages. Managing coverage disputes, including litigation and arbitration matters initiated by Axis issuing companies. Formulating claims and litigation strategies, assigning and directing outside counsel, and ensuring consistent preparation of company witnesses. Providing guidance to North America Claims teams on coverage issues, disputes, and claim handling, and recommending outside counsel assignments. Monitoring and controlling coverage counsel and litigation costs in collaboration with Litigation Management and Vendor Management teams. Collaborating across disciplines and business units, including general counsel for errors and omissions arising from claim handling. Identifying trends and issues with liability and coverage, and developing processes and strategies for handling such claims. Supporting underwriting inquiries, policy construction, trend reporting, data analysis, and risk assessments. Recruiting, hiring, and retaining top talent, and developing succession plans. Building and maintaining relationships with internal stakeholders (peers, underwriting, actuarial, executive leaders) and external stakeholders (brokers, insureds, attorneys, auditors, reinsurers, vendors). Communicating with senior executives, brokers, reinsurers, actuaries, insureds, and auditors to demonstrate ownership, leadership, and strategic thinking. Coaching and mentoring direct reports, providing feedback, and supporting professional growth with HR partners. Key Skills & Abilities 7–10+ years of claims management experience with a wide variety of coverage issues and litigation across claim disciplines. Demonstrated ability to handle coverage issues involving diverse loss scenarios and present findings to senior management. In‑depth knowledge of claims, litigation, arbitration, and trial processes, with strong analytical, investigative, and negotiating skills. Experience practicing law and managing claims, both direct and third‑party. Ability to influence and collaborate at all organizational levels, internally, externally, and within peer groups. Analytical thinker focused on achieving results across legal and claims processes while balancing immediate claim issues and portfolio impact. Excellent oral and written communication skills, handling conflicting expectations and multiple viewpoints. Law degree and admission to the bar of at least one U.S. state. Travel required for team management, court proceedings, mediations, and settlements. For this position, we currently expect to offer a base salary in the range of $250,000–$270,000, with compensation based on experience and location.
