Nurse Practitioner - Cardiology - Mount Sinai Queens - Full Time Days

Description A nurse practitioner (NP) as described in Title VIII, Article 139 section 6910 of the New York Education Law is a registered nurse who has earned a separate certification as an NP through advanced clinical nursing education in a distinct specialty area of practice. Nurse practitioners are independent practitioners who diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient’s condition that falls within their specialty area of practice. NOTE: Medical orders, progress notes and treatment plans are not required to be countersigned by a physician. Education Requirements Licensure: New York State License with current registration as a registered nurse. State Certification: Certified by the New York State Department of Education as a Nurse Practitioner with the following qualifications: Graduate of a New York State registered Nurse Practitioner Program or equivalent, OR certified as an NP by a national association via examination. Completed a pharmacy component of at least the required semester hours and instructed in New York State and Federal Laws relating to prescriptions and recordkeeping (3‑hour course). Has a Collaborative Practice Agreement with a physician and designated protocols if experience as an NP is less than 3600 hours. For NPs with 3600+ practice hours, a Collaborative Relationship with a physician is required. Master’s degree program designed to prepare an NP to diagnose, treat, and prescribe for a patient’s condition that falls within a specialty area of practice, or successful completion of an approved supplemental education program (e.g., post‑Masters NP certificate). National Board Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing required for all NPs hired effective June 1, 2019; for NPs billing for professional services, certification is required regardless of hire date. The requirement may be deferred up to one year with approval from the Chief Nursing Officer or designee. Credentialed through the Credentialing Committee of the Medical Board with approved delineation of privileges. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) certificate and Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Neonatal Advanced Life Support (NALS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certificates as required by specialty. Experience Requirements At least two years of nursing experience in the area of specialty practice applied for. Nurse Practitioner experience of at least one year preferred. Prior collaborative practice experience required for NPs with less than 3600 hours of practice. Responsibilities Assess the health status of patients and families through comprehensive health history and physical examination. Initiate and order selected therapeutic and diagnostic procedures, consultations, laboratory examinations, and prescribe medication regimens; interpret findings and adjust the plan of care according to accepted standards and practice guidelines. Educate and counsel in health promotion, maintenance, disease prevention, and management of acute/chronic illnesses. Document findings and plan of care in the patient’s medical record. Consult with physicians according to established standards, policies, procedures, and protocols. Demonstrate knowledge and skills to provide care appropriate to the age and needs of assigned patients. Initiate referrals to specialty services and foster continuity of care. Participate in team meetings and conferences to enhance an interdisciplinary approach to care delivery. Maintain patient and employee confidentiality in the management of information. Develop the plan of care based on diagnoses and individual patient needs, and monitor outcomes. Perform patient record reviews with collaborating physicians, at least quarterly if under a collaborative practice agreement. Complete the Focused Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (FPPE) or the Ongoing Professional Practice Proctoring Evaluation (OPPE) as required by the Medical Staff. Practice as a member of the allied health staff according to the rules and regulations of the Medical Staff and the bylaws of the Hospital Staff. Professional Development Support the mission, vision, philosophy, and goals of the Department of Nursing and the MSHS. Demonstrate accountability for own nursing practice. Advocate for patients and families and support patients’ rights. Consider ethical issues of professional nursing practice and adhere to the Code of Ethics. Demonstrate a humanistic, kind, and caring attitude in the delivery of health care. Serve as a resource person to nurses and other health team members. Participate in peer review. Incorporate research findings into clinical practice. Participate in approved nursing and medical research studies. Keep knowledge current through self‑directed learning, literature review, and attendance at educational programs. Contribute to defining, maintaining, and interpreting standards of nursing practice. Promote a positive image of advanced practice nursing through community programs. Participate in departmental and interdisciplinary committees influencing policies affecting nursing practice and patient care delivery. Seek opportunities to enhance professional nursing practice and influence outcomes. Treat co‑workers, patients, and families with dignity and respect. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required Ability to perform history taking and physical assessment techniques. Demonstrated competency in specialty‑specific procedures, documented during orientation and annual review with collaborating physician. Ability to interpret and apply principles of nursing research utilization. Ability to manage and coordinate a patient caseload. Work within a Collaborative Practice Agreement or Relationship as part of the health care team. Physical stamina and manual dexterity to perform tasks in area of assignment. Excellent interpersonal, communication, critical thinking, and leadership skills. Qualifications Licensure: New York State licensed registered nurse. State certification as an NP (details in Education Requirements). Master’s degree or approved supplemental education program. National Board Certification in Advanced Practice Nursing. DEA certificate, BLS, and specialty‑specific life‑support certifications (ACLS, PALS, NALS, NRP). At least two years of nursing experience in the specialty area and at least one year of NP experience preferred.
