The Work

The Network Specialist, SME will provide expert-level technical guidance, lead strategic network operations, and administer comprehensive network systems solutions for our client. This role will be responsible for designing, implementing, and managing network infrastructure to ensure optimal performance, reliability, and security across LAN, MAN, and WAN systems.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

• Network Design, Implementation, and Operations:
  • Provide technical guidance for developing, designing, and implementing advanced network systems, ensuring compliance with designated technical standards and customer requirements.
  • Create scalable solutions through system-level design and network configuration, involving the selection of hardware, operating systems, and platform specifications.
  • Perform capacity planning and design for large-scale systems projects, including cost analysis and vendor comparison.
• Network Performance Management:
  • Direct the compilation of records and analytical reports related to network operations and maintenance.
  • Perform diagnostics and troubleshooting for complex hardware, software, and network performance issues.
  • Analyze and monitor network traffic and identify improvements to ensure an optimal user experience.
  • Conduct routine testing and analysis of network systems, including power, communications machinery, modems, lines, and terminals.
• Incident Management and Vendor Coordination:
  • Monitor and respond to complex technical control hardware and software issues in real-time.
  • Engage vendor support groups to escalate and resolve network outages or degraded system performance during incidents.
  • Oversee the purchase, installation, testing, and support of network communication equipment and software.
• Operations Leadership and Oversight:
  • Supervise personnel engaged in multi-platform network operations, ensuring the seamless execution of systems security, network operations, and production support activities within large-scale or multi-shift environments.
  • Lead efforts to provide technical oversight for IT operations, including LAN/MAN/WAN administration, operating systems programming, system security, and web strategy implementation.
• Quality and Security Assurance:
  • Conduct quality assurance reviews and evaluate new and existing software products to ensure successful integration with current systems.
  • Develop and implement network security policies and procedures to safeguard organizational data, complying with industry standards and best-practice guidelines.
  • Provide input to strategic discussions on policy, standards development, and operating budget constraints.
• Network Performance Monitoring and Improvement:
  • Utilize hardware and software tools to diagnose and address factors impacting network performance.
  • Innovate and implement improvements to existing networks to enhance reliability, scalability, and efficiency.
• Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Qualifications – Here’s What You Need

• Experience: A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in network systems, technical guidance, and operations support.
• Certifications: At least one of the following certifications is mandatory:
  • Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE)
  • Cisco Certified Design Expert (CCDE)
  • Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP)
  • CompTIA Linux +
  • Red Hat Linux
  • Microsoft Certified Technology Specialist (MCTS)
• A Top-Secret Security Clearance is required.
• Must be able to pass a background check. May require additional background checks as required by projects and/or clients at any time during employment.

Minimum Skills:

• Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information appropriately
• Proficient in MS Office, Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, and Excel.
• High-pressure decision-making during network outages and during critical project deadlines may require strong problem-solving capabilities and stress management skills.

Preferred Qualifications: 

• Deep knowledge of systems engineering, network configurations, and administrative practices in large-scale or high-stakes environments.
• Proven experience supervising cross-functional teams in multi-shift or complex technical operations.
• Proficiency in troubleshooting techniques using advanced diagnostic tools to resolve IT and networking challenges effectively.
• Strong communication and leadership skills with the ability to engage in policy-level discussions and advise on technology budgeting.

Reports to: Program Manager

Working Conditions 

• Professional office environment, with the ability to work onsite in the main office.
• May require lifting and carrying computer or networking equipment (e.g., servers and routers) weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Frequent use of tools, cables, and other equipment to perform installations and repairs.
• Ability to move around technical spaces, such as server rooms or data centers, which may involve bending, kneeling, or climbing ladders.
• Must be physically and mentally able to perform duties extended periods of time.
• Ability to use a computer and other office productivity tools with sufficient speed to meet the demands of this position.
• May require working in high-security areas under strict access controls due to sensitive information or classified materials.
• Compliance with security clearances and monitoring systems is mandatory.
• Must be able to establish a productive and professional workspace.
• Must be able to sit for long periods of time looking at computer screen.
• May be asked to work a flexible schedule which may include holidays.
• May be asked to travel for business or professional development purposes.
• May be asked to work hours outside of normal business hours.
