Laboratory Technician/Physical Sciences

Laboratory Technician Location: Cypress College Department: CC Science, Engineering, and Math Employment: 100% Full‑time (12 months per year) Schedule: Monday – Friday, 7:30 am – 4:30 pm (subject to change) Job Responsibilities Assist in operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory or technical support service center; perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations. Support faculty in using a variety of equipment, materials, and supplies. Prepare and issue materials and equipment for student use; maintain records of materials and equipment used by students. Prepare instructional materials and equipment for faculty demonstration and student use as requested, according to approved procedures. Maintain laboratory environment in a safe, clean, and orderly condition. Order, receive, and store supplies, materials, and equipment; maintain inventories, ensuring adequate quantities are available for instructional use. Troubleshoot, adjust, maintain, and perform minor repairs to equipment; report major repair needs or arrange repairs per established procedures. Maintain various records and reports related to laboratory operations and activities as required; operate equipment related to the specialized area of assignment; perform clerical duties as required. Assist in coordination of exhibits or use of lab facilities and ensure availability of appropriate supplies and equipment. Train and provide work direction to others as directed. Learn and apply emerging technologies and advances to perform duties efficiently, organized, and timely. Participate in district/college efforts to increase faculty and staff diversity, address student achievement gaps, and create an inclusive work and educational environment; attend and participate in diversity, equity, and inclusion trainings and events. Perform related duties as assigned. Prepare for and host various public functions, and maintain budgets for assigned department (as required). Primary Purpose Assist in the operation and maintenance of an instructional laboratory or a technical support service center through specialized and technical duties. Working Relationships Maintain frequent contact with various district personnel, students, and outside vendors. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of principles, practices, procedures, and equipment of assigned subject area. Knowledge of proper methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in the assigned classroom or laboratory. Knowledge of appropriate safety regulations (OSHA and district) used in the assigned classroom or laboratory. Knowledge of principles and practices of providing work direction and training. Knowledge of record‑keeping techniques. Knowledge of district organization, operations, policies, and objectives. Knowledge of technical aspects of field of specialty. Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work. Ability to perform specialized and technical duties to assure efficient lab operations. Ability to assure the care of assigned equipment, materials, and supplies. Ability to issue and receive equipment and supplies. Ability to work independently and with little direction. Ability to train and provide work direction to others. Ability to assign and review the work of others. Ability to meet schedules and timelines. Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others. Minimum Qualifications High school diploma or GED. Two years of college‑level coursework in area of specialization and extensive practical experience in the area of specialization. Desirable Qualifications Experience integrating diversity, equity, and inclusion into duties and responsibilities. Minimum of one year of experience working in an educational or research laboratory; knowledge of laboratory principles, research practices, procedures, and equipment of physics, astronomy, geology, and technical science. Associate of Science degree in Physical Sciences or related field. Prior experience in approaching work and interactions with colleagues and students in an equity‑minded manner; ability to provide an inclusive and welcoming environment.
