About OUESS And The Undergraduate Curriculum Team

Under the leadership of the Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Student Success (VPUESS), the Office of Undergraduate Education and Student Success (OUESS) enriches undergraduate education and empowers students to succeed as leaders in progress and service. We engage in collaborative development and delivery of transformative learning experiences, and we continuously pursue initiatives to foster success for all students. Under the leadership of the Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education and Student Success (AVPUESS), the Undergraduate Curriculum (UC) team within OUESS is responsible for a wide range of Institute undergraduate curricular matters. The UC team typically works collaboratively with faculty governance; the leadership and professional staff of other OUESS units; Georgia Tech (GT) academic and administrative units; and the University System of Georgia (USG). Within the UC team, the major areas of responsibility of the Director of General Education and Curricular Initiatives (Director of GenEdCI) include General Education/the Core IMPACTS curriculum, the Georgia Legislative Requirements (GLRs), academic policy matters related to undergraduate education, and a range of issues involving the undergraduate curriculum and policies across the colleges and schools.

This position must be available to work standard Georgia Tech business hours M-F, 8-5 (or 7-4 or 9-6) as well as some evenings and weekends with advance notice. We are looking for hardworking professionals who are dedicated to undergraduate education and to students as our top priority to join our talented, energetic, and creative OUESS and UC teams.

Job Summary

Reporting to the AVPUESS, the Director of GenEdCI manages and advances the design, implementation, and integration of undergraduate curricular initiatives and academic policies that fall within the purview of the VPUESS, typically involving partnership, coordination, or liaison with Georgia Tech (GT) administrative and/or academic units and/or units of the USG. These initiatives and policies may involve but are not limited to: General Education/Core IMPACTS, the GLRs, undergraduate academic policies, undergraduate minors and certificates, and dual enrollment. The position also provides collaborative support for initiatives and special projects led by other teams within OUESS, which may be related to academic maps, degree planning, learning support, and a range of other undergraduate curricular matters.

This position may supervise professional and/or student assistant positions as assigned. This position may teach an undergraduate General Education/Core IMPACTS course corresponding with the Director's disciplinary expertise, contingent on approvals by the AVPUESS and the appropriate college/school leadership.

Contingent on the approval of the AVPUESS and the relevant academic or unit leadership, this position may be structured as a 75% supplementary administrative leadership appointment in OUESS while maintaining a 25% appointment in a GT academic unit or another GT administrative unit.

Responsibilities

In performing the duties listed below, the Director of GenEdCI engages with academic and administrative leadership, faculty, advisors, staff, students, and others within GT and the USG as well as other stakeholders and partners to advance the mission of OUESS, the Institute Strategic Plan (ISP), and the priorities and goals of the VPUESS and AVPUESS. In performing these duties, the Director acts as an ambassador for OUESS, the VPUESS, and the AVPUESS in fostering collaborative relationships and supporting and promoting the OUESS mission, the ISP, and the priorities and goals of the VPUESS and AVPUESS.

The Director's Duties Include, But Are Not Limited To

  • Under the leadership and direction of the AVPUESS, support GT's general education policies, practices, and processes, in alignment with GT and USG policies. This includes:
  • managing processes for updating GT's general education policies and practices and
  • serving as a point of contact for academic leadership, faculty, and academic advisors about general education policies and practices
  • serving as a standing (ex officio) member of the Institute Undergraduate Curriculum Committee (IUCC) General Education & Policy Subcommittee (GEPS)
  • collaborating with the Office of Academic Effectiveness (OAE) on general education assessment
  • assisting with the preparation of narratives for accreditation and other reports and maintaining and updating the UC General Education website
  • attending meetings or conferences relevant to general education policies, practices, and processes
  • Oversee GT's implementation of the GLRs. This includes:
  • supporting academic units in GT's implementation of the GLRs, including undergraduate curriculum leadership, faculty, and academic advisors
  • obtaining and analyzing data regarding GLR for-credit courses and GLR non-credit Canvas modules and engaging in collaborative efforts to maintain, support, and update GT's
  • implementation of the GLRs with USG partners and with GT partners, including academic units, the Registrar's Office, Digital Learning, and the Office of Disability Services
  • preparing narratives and other reports on the GLRs as requested and maintaining and updating the UC GLR webpage
  • attending meetings or conferences relevant to GT's implementation of the GLRs
  • Serve as a member of the joint (OUESS and Registrar's Office) Undergraduate Curriculum Operations & Advisory Team (UCOAT) and actively contribute to, support, and advance its initiatives and recommendations.
  • Serve as a "standing guest" on the Student Rules and Regulations Committee on behalf of the VPUESS and AVPUESS to provide input and feedback on academic policies that relate to undergraduate education; ensure that the VPUESS, AVPUESS, and appropriate OUESS leadership are fully briefed on potential policy changes; and develop communication plans to ensure approved policies are communicated to appropriate stakeholders.
  • Provide support for, and potentially lead, other GT and/or USG undergraduate curricular initiatives as assigned by the AVPUESS or VPUESS.
  • Work with the AVPUESS and/or VPUESS to support and coordinate OUESS committees, such as the Athletic Academic Steering Committee, including documenting meeting notes and coordinating follow up.
  • Compile notes and updates on various GT and USG undergraduate curricular policy initiatives, such as approvals of new or modified courses, degree programs or academic policies, and communicate updates to academic advisors and the network of undergraduate academic leadership maintained by OUESS.
  • Lead the organization, planning, and delivery of semi-annual (fall and spring) OUESS Curricular Updates for academic advisors and the network of undergraduate academic leadership.
  • Initiate analyses of policies and data and work collaboratively within OUESS and in partnership with other Institute units to translate these studies/analyses into actionable proposals and plans that yield improvements in systems and processes aligned with the OUESS mission and the ISP, the priorities and goals of the VPUESS and AVPUESS, and the missions, priorities, and goals of partner units.
  • Prepare reports, websites, and other documentation regarding undergraduate curricular matters as requested by the AVPUESS and/or VPUESS.
  • Perform other special projects, duties, and analyses as assigned by the AVPUESS and/or VPUESS regarding undergraduate education and ongoing or potential initiatives and programs related to curriculum.
  • Teach one General Education/Core IMPACTS course corresponding with the Director's disciplinary expertise per academic year, contingent on approvals of the course assignment and teaching schedule by the AVPUESS and the appropriate college/school leadership (any additional teaching, including supplemental teaching, is contingent on prior approval by the AVPUESS).
  • Serve as a member of the OUESS leadership team and provide supportive leadership contributions to all OUESS units, programs, and services as requested by the AVPUESS or VPUESS.

Required Qualifications

Internal (GT) Applicants

Current full-time GT appointment as tenured or tenure-track faculty at any rank or as academic professional at any rank.

External (non-GT) Applicants

Qualification for appointment at GT as an academic professional at any rank as outlined in section 3.2.2 of the Georgia Tech Faculty Handbook:

Academic Professional

Terminal degree.

  • Successful and measurable related experience in a position of significant responsibility and authority within a program area.
  • Demonstrated impact.
  • Six (6) years or more as a Senior Academic Professional (or equivalent rank).

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with curricular initiatives.
  • Experience in leading or contributing to curricular policy initiatives and/or policy implementation.
  • Experience in developing or contributing to proposals and plans for improvements in systems and processes in higher education.
  • Experience teaching in the General Education curriculum.
  • Experience in academic advising.
  • Experience in expanding access and supporting student success.
  • Completed terminal degree in an academic discipline appropriate to the role.
  • Academic qualifications appropriate to serve as lead instructor for a course in the GT General Education/Core IMPACTS curriculum.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in higher education, including undergraduate teaching experience.
  • Commitment to and capacity to act as an ambassador in supporting and promoting the mission of OUESS, the ISP, and the priorities and goals of the VPUESS and AVPUESS.
  • Strong understanding of undergraduate curriculum design.
  • Strong understanding of General Education principles and practices.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent collaborative skills, including the capacity to collaborate respectfully and effectively with academic and administrative leadership, faculty, advisors, staff, students, and others within
  • GT and the USG as well as other stakeholders and partners.
  • Excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to use technologies and software employed in professional office settings.

Proposed Salary Compensation will be determined based on the selected candidate's background and experience.
