Assistant United States Attorney- TERM (Civil)

Overview The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Texas is among the largest and busiest in the nation, spanning 43 counties and 44,000 square miles and representing 8.3 million people from the Houston area to the Mexico border. Employment with the Office is a unique, challenging, and rewarding experience for the highly motivated attorney. This position is located in Houston, Texas. As an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Civil Division, you will litigate a broad range of civil cases on behalf of the United States, including land condemnation matters, border enforcement, immigration enforcement, warrants, asylum and passport cases, and general civil litigation. The role offers frequent courtroom appearances in a fast‑paced, challenging, and varied caseload. Responsibilities Work on land condemnation matters and related cases involving the border with Mexico. Handle immigration enforcement matters, issuing warrants, defending asylum and passport cases, and general civil litigation matters. Perform duties that increase in complexity as your training and experience progress. Requirements You must be a United States citizen or national. Applicants must possess a J.D. degree (or equivalent) and be an active member of the bar in any U.S. jurisdiction by the entry‑on‑duty date. Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre‑employment adjudication, including fingerprint, credit, tax checks, and drug testing. You must be registered for Selective Service, if required. Must reside in the district or within 25 miles thereof. This is a temporary position not to exceed September 30, 2029. Preferred Qualifications Strong academic credentials and superior legal research and writing skills. Quick analytical ability to articulate critical case‑related issues accurately and precisely. High‑volume courtroom experience, including first‑chair jury trials, is preferred. Outstanding organizational, time‑management, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work collaboratively with AUSAs, support staff, and investigative agencies. Demonstrated commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Computer proficiency with ability to conduct independent legal research, drafting, and correspondence. Compensation and Benefits The range of pay for this position, including locality, is $88,510.00 to $197,100.00.
