Assistant United States Attorney - Civil The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Southern District of Texas is one of the largest agencies in the nation, spanning 43 counties and 44,000 square miles and representing 8.3 million people from the Houston area to the Mexico border. As an Assistant United States Attorney (AUSA) in the Civil Division based in Houston, you will litigate a broad range of cases involving significant, complex issues on behalf of the United States in federal court. You will handle land condemnation matters and related cases involving the border with Mexico, immigration enforcement matters, issuing warrants, defending asylum and passport cases, and general civil litigation matters. Responsibilities will grow in complexity as your training and experience progress. Responsibilities: Litigate civil cases on behalf of the United States. Engage in general civil litigation. Increase responsibilities and complexity as your training progresses. Required Qualifications: J.D. degree. Active membership in any U.S. bar. At least 1 year of post‑J.D. legal or other relevant experience. United States citizenship. Preferred Qualifications: Strong academic credentials. Superior legal research and writing skills. Rapid analytical ability to articulate case‑related issues. High‑volume courtroom experience. Excellent organizational, time‑management, and interpersonal skills. Ability to work in a supportive, professional team environment. Commitment to professionalism, ethics, civility, and public service. Courtroom experience, including first‑chair jury trials. Computer proficiency and self‑sufficiency in legal research, writing, and routine correspondence. Additional Information: All initial attorney positions are temporary, 14‑month (temporary) basis. This is a term position not to exceed March 31, 2028; it may be extended or made permanent without further competition. Pay range: $85,270.00–$195,100.00 (including locality).
