Coordinator of Recreational Sports

Purpose Under the general supervision of the Director of Recreation, the Coordinator of Recreational Sports administers the recreational sports programs and manages the daily operations of the Intramural Sports and Sports Club programs. The Coordinator assists the Director with fiscal and facility management, organizational development, and day‑to‑day operations. The coordinator oversees risk management, policy development, scheduling, event planning, personnel supervision and training, marketing and promotions, programming, strategic planning, and program assessment. The incumbent plans, organizes, implements, and evaluates programs that promote the educational and social development of students outside the classroom. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Oversee all aspects of the Sports Club program, develop and implement a comprehensive training curriculum, and advise club councils and student organizations. Update the sports club handbook and train on topics such as safety, travel, fundraising, insurance, budgeting, officer development, competitions, and space reservations. Oversee all aspects of the Intramural program; design semester and academic year intramural sports programs, develop collaborations, monitor student work, resolve operations issues, and brief the Director regarding routine work and special projects. Oversee the hiring, development, supervision, and bi‑annual evaluation of student staff. Develop procedures and implement policies, ensuring proper interpretation and application for all related facilities and programs. Maintain knowledge of risk management standards and safety practices; ensure park and equipment maintenance; design preventive maintenance programs. Develop strategic plans and annual reporting aligned with department, division, and university goals. Conduct regular assessments of program, department, and divisional goals. Plan, develop, implement, and assist the department with special events, informal recreation, daily operations, and facility functions in collaboration with department and divisional staff. Support campus‑wide initiatives events such as Otter Days, RecFest, RecDay, RecOlympics, staff training, orientation, commencement, RAFT Weekend, and others. Other Functions Perform other job-related duties and special projects as assigned. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Working knowledge of principles of individual and group behavior, organizational and program management. Ability to interpret and apply rules and regulations, plan work assignments, conduct interviews, reason logically, collect and evaluate data, and advise students individually or in groups. Recognize multicultural and multi‑aged value systems and establish cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, student organizations, private agencies, and community contacts. Minimum Qualifications Experience: Three years of progressively responsible professional student services work experience. A master’s degree in Counseling, Clinical Psychology, Social Work, or a directly related field may substitute for one year of experience. A doctorate and appropriate internship or clinical training may substitute for the three years for positions with major counseling responsibilities. Education: Graduation from a four‑year college or university in a related field, supplemented by upper‑division or graduate coursework in counseling techniques, interviewing, and conflict resolution where applicable. Preferred Qualifications Master’s degree in Recreation, Education, Higher Education, or related field. Two or more years of post‑graduate experience in program coordination and development at the collegiate level, including student leadership development, recreation, intramural sports, sports clubs, activities programming, recreation facilities management, budget development, and fiscal management. Experience supervising students, administrative staff, and professionals. Demonstrated success in creating a team environment with strong customer service orientation. Excellent human relations, conflict resolution, assessment, facilitation, communication, presentation, and project management skills. Technical fluency with Oracle/PeopleSoft, CSU Common Management System or equivalent, Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, 25Live, intranet drives, and internet browsers. Must maintain a valid driver’s license, pass defensive training, and be insurable under university coverage. May require occasional evenings and/or weekend work. Physical Environment Office environment with standard equipment. Requires extended periods at a computer and desk. May require travel between campus offices and off‑campus locations.
