About the Position

Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Neuro Med-Surg Acute Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 12-Hour Nights Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: 1 year License: Active Illinois RN license Certifications: BLS, NIHSS Must-Have: Level 1 trauma experience, previous travel experience, prior experience working on a dedicated neuro unit Description: The unit consists of 54 beds with 2 semi-private rooms. Patient ratios are 1:4-5 during day shift and 1:5-6 during night shift. Common diagnoses include stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience conditions. There is a charge nurse present 24/7 who does not take patient assignments unless staffing is critically low. A house supervisor is also available 24/7. Nurse aides and patient care techs are present on the unit, with ratios of 1:9-10 during the day and evening shifts, and 1:10-12 at night. RNs are required to titrate drips, specifically having experience with heparin titrated drips based on PTT. There are telemetry monitors throughout the facility, and RNs are not required to read their own strips. Shifts are 12 hours in length, and requests for scheduling will be accommodated when possible. Every other weekend is required, covering both Saturday and Sunday. Holiday working requirements are also every other holiday. Floating to a general unit may be required, ensuring that nurses are only assigned tasks they are competent in if floated outside of their general unit. There is no specific dress code for scrubs, but tattoos must be covered while on duty, and piercings are limited to earrings. The orientation period includes 2 days of training with an educator and one-on-one patient care with a preceptor.
