This position is located at the Minneapolis VA Health Care System in Minneapolis, Minnesota. This is an open continuous announcement, open until June 25, 2026. Qualified applicants will be considered and referred as vacancies become available.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation.
Basic Requirements
- United States citizenship; non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree in allopathic or osteopathic medicine.
- Degree must have been obtained from a school approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year the course of study was completed.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a U.S. State, Territory, Commonwealth or the District of Columbia.
- Residency training: physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- Alternatively one year of post‑medical‑school training (internship, first year of residency, or transitional year residency) approved by ACGME or AOA followed by two years of independent practice under a full and unrestricted license in the United States.
- Or non‑U.S. residency training programs followed by a minimum of three years of verified independent practice in the United States performing duties related to the position.
- Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements may be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs). PRPs must hold a full license, be appointed on an intermittent basis, and are not considered independent practitioners.
- PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; instead they have a scope of practice that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
- In rare circumstances the Facility Director may submit a memo to the VISN Director for reasonable exceptions to the residency training requirement.

Duties
- Administer anesthesia to patients rendering them insensitive to pain during surgery or procedures; provide continuous and vigilant monitoring of the patient's physical response to anesthetic agents; maintain excellence in endotracheal intubation, extubation, airway management, and use of airway adjuncts.
- Make a reasonable anesthetic plan for patients with severe comorbidities; perform all appropriate techniques of the anesthetic plan including insertion of intravenous lines, arterial lines, central lines, invasive monitoring catheters, regional anesthesia, and transesophageal echocardiography; interpret arterial blood gases, ECGs, and relevant laboratory results; use precautions to minimize infection risks; perform pre‑anesthetic evaluation; develop an anesthetic plan and select agents and techniques; manage induction, maintenance, and emergence from general, regional, or monitored anesthesia cases and satellite anesthesia care; manage postoperative pain; recognize abnormal responses and initiate corrective measures; determine need for additional labs; provide resuscitative care as necessary; evaluate and manage the patient in the immediate post‑operative period; administer intravenous fluids appropriate to the patient's history and procedure.
- Administer blood products and monitor for adverse responses; document patient status in the anesthesia record; perform safety and performance checks on anesthesia equipment; verify supplies before care; participate in surgical and regional time‑outs; maintain patient confidentiality; hand‑off appropriately with peri‑operative personnel; in a life‑threatening emergency provide anesthesia and resuscitative care; maintain ACLS certification; teach and evaluate residents and students; collaborate with CRNAs; assume responsibility for controlled substances as per department and federal policy; maintain required continuing education, credentialing, and licensure; utilize the EMR system appropriately; participate in after‑hours call as scheduled by the chief; be dependable, reliable, and responsible in attendance and obligations to patients, committees, and coworkers; conduct oneself professionally, collegially, and with optimism.

- Contract: No Physician Employment Contract and no significant restriction on moonlighting.
- Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 8:00 am to 4:30 pm.
- J-1 visa holders may be considered when no qualified U.S. citizens are available; VA supports requests for waiver of the 2-year home residency requirement required of J-1 visa holders.
