Retirement Eligibility: TRS Eligible Position Overview The UNT Controller Department at the University of North Texas System is seeking to hire a Principal Accountant to join our team. This position performs complex (journey-level) accounting work. Department Summary The UNT Controller's Office oversees daily accounting and financial reporting for the UNT campus in Denton. The controller office also oversees capital asset accounting, cash and state appropriation management and all external reporting. Minimum Qualifications Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance or a related field and six years of accounting experience. Preferred Qualifications State of Texas experience, higher education experience, PeopleSoft financials experience. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of fiscal programs, governmental accounting, budgeting control methods, policies, procedures, laws and regulations related to financial operations. Thorough knowledge of accepted accounting practices, legal statutes, and policies affecting financial record keeping. Skill in using office equipment, computers, and associated software applications. Ability to interpret and apply accounting theory, plan and coordinate financial programs, develop procedures and coordinate accounting operations, interpret laws and regulations, communicate effectively, and train others. Skill in using office computer information systems to organize, store, manipulate and retrieve data. Effective oral and written communication skills. Critical thinking skills. Ability to work accurately with numerical detail consistently and perform accounting operations legibly. Ability to analyze, consolidate, and present accounting data in clear concise form. Demonstrated ability to coordinate and supervise the work of others. Job Duties Direct the maintenance of accounting records on receipts and disbursements in compliance with state and federal statutes. Assist in planning accounting and administrative support work procedures. Prepare and review financial statements, reports, schedules, and exhibits; prepare and audit general journal entries; prepare and audit payment, cash, purchase, travel, and related vouchers. Prepare and review periodic analyses of fund balances and expenditures; prepare technical reports for accounting review. Audit accounting and financial documents for accuracy and compliance with departmental policies, procedures, and state and federal statutes. Classify, code, post, and balance financial and accounting documents and records. Check accounting operations in progress, and review and audit completed financial records for accuracy and conformance with legal and departmental procedures and regulations. Maintain and determine the accuracy and reliability of accounting records such as expenditure, fund, appropriation, expense and revenue collection records, ensuring agency assets are accounted for properly. Analyze and recommend improvements or revisions to the accounting system and accompanying procedures. Research and reconcile discrepancies in accounts, report findings; assist in planning procedures and regulations to control accounting processes and prepare instructional documents or related forms as necessary. Instruct staff on the maintenance of accounting records on expenditures and revenue collected, posting of general ledgers, and posting of journal entries and/or adjustments.
