Commercial Construction Superintendent
$110k - $140kShames Construction
Shames Construction has been building commercial projects since 1987. As a 100% woman-owned general contractor, we specialize in retail, big-box retail, grocery, restaurant, entertainment, and industrial construction.
We partner with nationally recognized clients and have built our reputation on integrity, quality, accountability, and long-term relationships.
We are looking for an experienced Commercial Construction Superintendent who can independently run a project in the field from mobilization through final closeout.
This is a hands-on field leadership position. Our Project Managers and Project Assistants support the project team, but the Superintendent owns day-to-day field operations, anticipates what's next, manages the schedule and subcontractors, maintains accurate documentation, and communicates issues before they become problems.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
Field Leadership & Project Execution
- Serve as Shames Construction’s primary field representative and lead all day-to-day jobsite operations from mobilization through punch, turnover, and closeout.
- Coordinate and manage all subcontractors, vendors, deliveries, inspections, and daily construction activities.
- Establish daily priorities and hold subcontractors accountable for manpower, schedule, safety, quality, and performance.
- Coordinate site logistics, staging, access, temporary facilities, and material deliveries.
- Maintain a safe, organized, professional jobsite.
- Work closely with the Project Manager while independently managing routine field operations and decisions.
- Identify potential problems early, develop solutions within your authority, and communicate issues before they affect the project.
Scheduling is a critical responsibility of this position.
- Understand and actively manage the overall project schedule.
- Personally develop and maintain accurate 3-week look-ahead schedules.
- Plan and coordinate construction sequencing across all trades.
- Manage subcontractor manpower and verify adequate staffing to meet scheduled activities.
- Anticipate inspections, deliveries, long-lead materials, owner requirements, access constraints, and other schedule impacts.
- Identify schedule slippage early and develop recovery plans when work falls behind.
- Communicate schedule risks and recovery strategies to the Project Manager before they become critical.
Plans, Specifications & Coordination
- Independently read and interpret architectural, structural, civil, and MEP drawings and specifications.
- Understand commercial construction means, methods, sequencing, and constructability.
- Identify drawing conflicts, missing information, constructability concerns, and coordination issues before they impact the work.
- Review work in place against drawings, specifications, approved submittals, and project requirements.
- Coordinate field-related RFIs, submittals, inspections, and project information with the project team.
- Ensure work is complete and ready before inspections are requested.
Subcontractor Management
- Manage multiple subcontractor trades simultaneously and maintain accountability for performance.
- Conduct subcontractor coordination and safety meetings as required.
- Address manpower shortages, quality issues, schedule concerns, and performance problems promptly.
- Resolve field conflicts professionally while maintaining productive working relationships.
- Build strong relationships with subcontractors, inspectors, clients, vendors, and the Shames project team.
- Take ownership of problems and solutions rather than assigning blame.
Procore & Field Documentation
The Superintendent is personally responsible for keeping field documentation accurate and current.
- Maintain daily logs and progress photos in Procore.
- Document manpower, inspections, deliveries, delays, field conditions, safety matters, and significant project events.
- Maintain required safety and project-specific compliance documentation.
- Track punch-list and deficiency items through completion.
- Support RFI, submittal, change, inspection, turnover, and closeout documentation from the field.
- Keep field documentation current without relying on the Project Manager or Project Assistant to complete routine Superintendent documentation.
Safety, Quality & Closeout
- Ensure compliance with OSHA requirements, Shames Construction safety policies, and client-specific requirements.
- Conduct required safety meetings and maintain associated documentation.
- Inspect work for quality and conformance with contract documents.
- Address deficient work promptly before it becomes a larger issue.
- Coordinate inspections, punch-list activities, corrections, turnover, and final completion.
- Remain actively engaged through project closeout.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- 5+ years of experience as a Superintendent directly employed by a commercial General Contractor.
- Experience serving as the primary site Superintendent responsible for the entire jobsite, not solely one trade or crew.
- Proven experience independently managing commercial construction projects from mobilization/startup through punch, turnover, and closeout.
- Ground-up commercial construction experience is required.
- Experience in one or more of the following:
- Retail
- Big-box retail
- Grocery
- Restaurant
- Entertainment
- Proven experience managing multiple subcontractor trades simultaneously.
- Strong knowledge of commercial construction means, methods, sequencing, and constructability.
- Ability to independently read and coordinate architectural, structural, civil, and MEP drawings and specifications.
- Strong scheduling experience, including personally developing and managing look-aheads, trade sequencing, subcontractor manpower, inspections, schedule constraints, and recovery plans.
- Ability to identify field and schedule problems early and take appropriate action without waiting for the Project Manager to direct routine field activities.
- Hands‑on Procore experience, including daily logs, progress photos, and field documentation.
- Working knowledge of RFIs, submittals, inspections, safety documentation, punch lists, and closeout.
- Strong subcontractor leadership, communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
- Reliable attendance and consistent jobsite presence.
- Valid driver’s license with a driving record that meets company insurance requirements.
Experience primarily limited to residential, multifamily, healthcare, schools/educational, office, warehouse/distribution, specialty-trade supervision, or foreman-level responsibilities does not meet the required experience for this position.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Occupied/open-store commercial construction experience.
- Big-box retail or grocery construction experience.
- Experience working with nationally recognized retail clients.
- Walmart or similar client-specific compliance experience.
- Fast‑track or phased commercial construction experience.
- OSHA 30 Certification.
- CPR/First Aid Certification.
- SWPPP/stormwater experience or certification.
WHAT SUCCESS LOOKS LIKE
Our successful Superintendents run the job rather than wait to be told what to do next.
You look ahead, understand the schedule, verify that subcontractors and materials will be ready, recognize when something is getting off track, and take action early.
You keep your documentation current because it is part of running the project. You hold subcontractors accountable while maintaining professional relationships. You communicate problems while they can still be solved, take responsibility when something goes wrong, and are comfortable saying when you don't know something and finding the right answer.
Most importantly, you take ownership of the jobsite and see the project through to completion.
