NATURAL RESOURCES MANAGEMENT SPECIALIST III AND IV - TEMPORARY - LIHUE, KAUAI

Recruitment Number 26-0017 The current vacancy is a temporary full-time position with the Department of Land & Natural Resources, Forestry & Wildlife Division. Salary ranges: Level III $4,961 to $6,043 per month (SR-20, Step D to I); Level IV $5,369 to $6,535 per month (SR-22, Step D to I). Note: Hiring rates will be based on availability of funds, applicant’s qualifications, and other relevant factors. Employees appointed to temporary positions may also gain membership in the civil service upon satisfactory completion of an initial probation period of at least six months. Once you become a member of the civil service, you become eligible to apply for promotion and transfer opportunities to permanent and other temporary positions. You may also enjoy other rights and benefits afforded to an employee in a permanent position with the exception of return rights and placement rights associated with a reduction-in-force. Role Responsibilities Develop and implement operational management plans for natural area reserves and other natural areas. Conduct inventory of species and ecosystem conditions. Protect areas. Develop and implement innovative management prescriptions. Monitor ecosystem and species trends; implement adaptive management as needed. Design and implement educational and scientific projects, programs, and studies. NRMS III Responsibilities Independent worker assigned projects of average difficulty and complexity; problems usually resolved by standard guides and procedures; perform other duties as assigned. NRMS IV Responsibilities Independent worker performing assignments across the full range of natural area management activities. Plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate assigned projects which may involve entire natural areas or specific portions. Monitor and manage natural areas; provide consultation to other professionals regarding natural resources management and planning. Provide information and education to groups, individuals, and others regarding natural area management activities, goals, and objectives. Perform other duties as assigned. Qualifications Legal Authorization to Work Requirement: Citizen, national, or permanent resident alien of the United States; or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States. Education: Bachelor's degree from an accredited four‑year college or university with a major in a natural resources field such as: Natural resources management, forestry, wildlife management, or other related resource management majors. Botany, zoology, wildlife biology, entomology, or other related natural resource science majors. Environmental studies with an area of concentration related to natural resource management. Specialized Experience: NRMS III: One (1) year of progressively responsible professional experience involving any of the following: management, utilization and/or conservation of natural resources—forests, water, wildlife, soils, land, rare species preservation, protected area management, or closely related work; protection of natural resources against fire, disease, insects, weeds, animals, or other depredations; applied research and analysis directly applicable to the development, protection, and management of natural resources; and/or resource planning for the development and management of natural resources. NRMS IV: Two (2) years of progressively responsible professional experience. Also, at least one (1) year of the Specialized Experience must have been comparable in scope and complexity to the class NRMS III in the State service. Supervisory Aptitude: For NRMS IV positions, supervisory aptitude rather than actual supervisory experience may be accepted; considered met when there is strong evidence of necessary supervisory abilities and/or potential. Driver's License: Must possess a valid driver’s license at the time of appointment. Lift and Carry: Ability to lift/carry objects weighing up to 40 pounds unassisted and up to 50 pounds assisted by another person and/or use of equipment such as hoisting equipment or hand truck.
