Department: 11018 Carolinas Medical Center - LCH: Mission and Spiritual Care Status: Full time Benefits Eligible: Yes Hours Per Week: 40 Schedule Details: Monday through Friday, 8a-5p Pay Range: $28.55 - $42.85 Major Responsibilities Provide person-centered spiritual care, support and sacraments for patients, families, physicians, and hospital personnel. Deliver spiritual care services, consultation, and support to patients, families, physicians, and hospital personnel as assigned and in accordance with department policies. Facilitate sacramental ministries such as Holy Communion, Baptism, Confession and Absolution, Sacrament of the Sick, and other rites. Respond to Codes Yellow, Codes Blue, deaths and other emergencies or crises. Provide spiritual care and support to hospital personnel experiencing the death of a patient or a critical incident in relation to patient, family, or staff. Assist families with their needs regarding the patient's healthcare so they can provide supportive care to the patient; assist family members in understanding procedures surrounding a death and in contacting family or significant persons. Promote patient safety by reporting issues through established channels and participating in safety initiatives. Assist patients and families to communicate wishes of care through Advance Directives. Respond to requests and referrals for information and assistance with health care Advance Directives, such as Power of Attorney for Health Care. Assist patients and families in completing Advance Directives and documenting them in the medical record. Identify complex issues related to medical ethics and refer to Senior Staff Chaplain or Medical Ethicist for assistance in follow up and resolution. Collaborate with Senior Staff Chaplains in participation in patient advance care planning, patient family goals of care meetings, interdisciplinary team activities and development, staff and patient directed support groups. Participate in the life and work of the Mission and Spiritual Care department to assure integrated efficient services. Provide overall site coverage. Work shifts as needed to provide 24‑hour coverage, including weekends and holidays. Conduct chapel services and memorial services as scheduled. Serve on department, site, or system committees as needed. Submit required reports by the dates required. Interpret the Advocate Mission, Values and Philosophy in primary areas of assignment/specialization and assist managers in developing goals and objectives to enhance implementation. Support the hospital ministry of community clergy with referrals, information, education, counseling, and consultation. Participate, where feasible, in community clergy associations. Serve as guest speaker at area houses of worship, when possible. Serve as resource to clergy, houses of worship, and community groups to enhance hospital community liaisons. Maintain good standing and ecclesiastical endorsement through active participation in the faith community. Education / Experience Required Bachelor's degree (BA or BS) from an accredited college or university Master of Divinity (M.Div.) or equivalent master's degree program Letter from a recognized certifying agency (APC, NACC, ACPE, or NAJC) confirming that theological education standards for certification have been met, if using an equivalent degree Four successfully completed units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) Ecclesiastical endorsement from the candidate's faith community Member in good standing with sponsoring faith community 1–3 years of clinical chaplaincy experience Preferred Qualifications Strong pastoral care and spiritual assessment skills Experience working in a healthcare setting Ability to provide emotional and spiritual support to patients, families, and care teams Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required Good communication skills; time management; ability to understand and facilitate group process; ability to work with multidisciplinary teams; therapeutic communication; demonstrated problem solving; demonstrated group process and leadership; proficiency with word processing and basic computer programs; effective communication in English related to essential job activities. Board certification within 18 months of hire. Candidate for certification in Association of Professional Chaplains, National Association of Catholic Chaplains, or National Association of Jewish Chaplains. Physical Requirements and Working Conditions Must work flexible hours to accommodate 24‑hour on‑call coverage including evening and night shifts; designated shifts, weekends, and holidays. May be exposed to hazardous materials and life‑threatening diseases; may interact with aggressive or agitated patients; must manage patient restraint situations. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds without assistance; use of patient handling equipment when lifting over 35 pounds.
