Job Summary

Join our dedicated team as a Registered Nurse on a 25-bed acute inpatient psychiatry unit in New York, US. This unit specializes in providing comprehensive care to adult patients presenting with acute psychosis, including diagnoses such as depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, suicidal ideation, homicidal ideation, and dual diagnoses.

In this role, you will be integral to a multidisciplinary team, managing patient admissions, administering medications, and delivering direct patient care. Our unit emphasizes de-escalation techniques, utilizing restraints only as a last resort. You will contribute to a supportive environment with staffing ratios typically up to 5:1, ensuring focused and effective patient care.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide direct nursing care to patients experiencing acute psychiatric conditions.
• Administer medications accurately and monitor patient responses and side effects.
• Conduct thorough patient admissions, assessments, and care planning.
• Assume Charge Nurse responsibilities, overseeing unit operations and staff, following comprehensive training.
• Perform regular patient rounds, vital sign monitoring, and assist with activities of daily living.
• Facilitate therapeutic patient groups and engage patients in unit activities.
• Implement crisis intervention and de-escalation strategies; manage physical restraints safely and appropriately as a last resort.
• Collaborate with security personnel during patient escalations, manual holds, and restraint procedures.
• Respond to emergent medical issues by initiating 911 calls and coordinating transfers to an external Emergency Department.
• Maintain meticulous and timely documentation of patient care, observations, and interventions.

Required Qualifications

• Current Registered Nurse (RN) license in New York State.
• Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
• Experience in an acute inpatient psychiatric setting.
• Ability to manage a patient load, participate in patient groups, and perform vital signs.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, acute care environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Prior experience in a Charge Nurse or Admission Nurse role.
• Experience working in an Inpatient Addiction Rehab Unit (ARU).

Skills & Competencies

• Clinical Skills: Psychiatric assessment, medication administration, crisis intervention, de-escalation techniques, restraint management, vital sign monitoring, patient education, group facilitation.
• Equipment: Electronic Health Record (EHR) systems, basic medical equipment (e.g., vital signs monitors).

Shift Details

• Assignment Type: 13-week contract.
