Area Chief of Staff

Area Chief of Staff Pay Range: $128,635 – $185,806 annually (variable pay available based on production in most states, excluding Puerto Rico.) The Area Chief of Staff (ACOS) leads, develops, and manages associate veterinarians and their teams in assigned Banfield pet hospitals. The ACOS is responsible for driving a culture of quality care, meeting key performance indicators, ensuring regulatory compliance, and fostering doctor engagement and retention. Serve as Responsible Veterinarian for Veterinary & Pharmacy Board permits and for the controlled‑substance inventory. Develop and execute doctor engagement and retention strategies, assess risk, and create a supportive culture. Provide medical leadership, building an inclusive and collaborative work environment with practice managers. Validate clinical skillsets through record reviews, audits, patient‑safety event reviews, and quality assignments. Deliver veterinary services; allocate clinical time in partnership with DVQ. Oversee coaching and experiential learning for newly hired veterinarians. Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality and Talent Acquisition to recruit veterinary talent. Represent Banfield at community events and serve as brand ambassador. Support externs, student‑job program participants, and candidates during hospital observations. Work with associate doctors to meet productivity goals through preventive care, quality medicine, and client experience. Achieve veterinary operations KPIs, coordinate with practice managers, and manage OGSM performance. Build a veterinary leadership bench and create succession plans for the hospital pod. Maintain compliance with regulatory and industry standards through audits and reviews. Manage medical‑equipment inventory and new‑equipment requests. Handle client‑complaint resolution related to medical care standards. Deliver the highest level of veterinary care, engaging clients and ensuring exceptional experiences. Perform other hospital duties as assigned. Competencies & Skills Leadership: plan and align, set vision, develop talent, manage conflict, drive results, ensure accountability. Professionalism: integrity, cooperation, flexibility, independence, resilience, and empathy. Experience & Education Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent foreign degree. Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure in all applicable state veterinary boards. Minimum 3 years experience in small‑animal medicine and surgery practice. State‑controlled‑substance and federal DEA license within 3 months of employment. USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service accreditation within 3 months of employment. Special Working Conditions Long periods at a computer and up to 40+ hours per week. Physical requirements: standing, walking, stooping, kneeling, crouching, lifting up to 50 lbs. Exposure to pets, anesthesia, radiation, biological hazards, and controlled substances. Occasional travel for hospital assistance, vendor visits, and associate education.
