Responsibilities


Under general supervision, the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) oversees clinical operations and healthcare delivery, ensures compliance with accreditation and professional standards, supports quality improvement and credentialing activities, provides medical guidance to clinical staff, delivers direct patient care, and coordinates campus and public health initiatives.

  • Oversees the delivery of health care services, including medical diagnostic and treatment activities of general primary care physicians, consultant specialty physicians, nurse practitioners, and allied health professionals at Klotz Student Health Center to ensure a high standard of medical care consistent with college student health needs and the prevailing standards of care among primary care providers in Southern California.
  • Serves as Laboratory Director. In collaboration with Laboratory lead, formulates policies and procedures necessary for the operation of the Klotz laboratory, pharmacy, and x-ray departments, including compliance with state, federal, and CSU regulations as well as the preparation of materials/documentation to meet COLA and other respective accreditation requirements.
  • Oversees travel medicine. Provides travel consultation to students, staff and faculty, including travel physicals. Coordinates lectures for academic groups travelling internationally, meeting with travel clinicians/RNs/lead pharmacist both before the lecture to debrief and plan for smooth delivery of relevant care including scheduling appointments and providing relevant travel vaccines; meets with team after travel group appointments and vaccines are completed to discuss strengths and areas of improvement.
  • Develops, revises, and oversees the implementation of clinical policies and protocols consistent with AAAHC standards; participates on the Accreditation Committee. Assists and supports the SHC Director in the preparation of materials and site surveys for accreditation.
  • Chairs the Quality Improvement Program, including (but not limited to): providing direction and oversight to the Quality Improvement Committee; identifies issues affecting healthcare quality and proposes and institutes systems to address these deficiencies; develops and coordinates the process and analysis of peer review; develops and implements mechanisms for assessment and feedback of patient care and clinic operations.
  • Serves as CMO for the Credentialing Committee. Reviews credentialing reports with SHC Director through CVO database. Completes credentialing and privileging of all licensed staff every three years in accordance with AAAHC requirements. Ensures new licensed staff complete credentialing prior to first day of work. Oversees and incorporates semi-annual peer review of SHC clinicians into privileging.
  • Provides direct patient care covering the full scope of student health needs in a primary care setting, including interviewing patients, diagnosing medical problems, prescribing treatment, counseling patients, conducting physical examinations, performs minor surgery not including general anesthesia, referring patients to specialists within and outside the SHC, ordering and interpreting X-Ray and lab tests, and performing related health care duties, and recording and completing case histories and reports.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of five (5) years of clinical experience in primary care, public health, integrated ambulatory care, or college health settings, preferably serving diverse populations.
  • Minimum of two years of progressive leadership and supervisory experience overseeing interdisciplinary healthcare teams, including physicians, nurse practitioners, laboratory, radiology, and pharmacy services.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of experience in emergency preparedness, emergency response management, and continuity of operations planning within a healthcare or higher education environment.
  • Equivalent to graduation from an accredited institution with a Master's Degree.
  • Demonstrated ability to serve collaboratively on multidisciplinary committees, including but not limited to Emergency Response, Quality Improvement, Infection Prevention and Control, and Risk Management committees.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with healthcare accreditation and regulatory compliance standards, including quality assurance and performance improvement initiatives.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Possession of a current and unrestricted California physician license.
  • Current Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) registration/certification.
  • Possession of a Board certification in primary care and/or specialty.
  • Current Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS) course/certification.
  • Certification and/or eligibility as a Laboratory Director in accordance with applicable state and federal regulations.

  • Clinical Leadership : Ability to provide effective medical direction and guidance to physicians, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, laboratory staff, radiology professionals, and other clinical personnel.
  • Quality Improvement: Ability to evaluate healthcare quality, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement effective systems that strengthen patient care and clinical operations.
  • Regulatory and Accreditation Compliance: Strong knowledge of healthcare regulations, accreditation standards, credentialing requirements, infection prevention practices, and professional standards.
  • Clinical Decision-Making: Advanced ability to assess, diagnose, treat, counsel, and refer patients while exercising sound medical judgment across a broad range of student health needs.
  • Collaboration and Communication: Ability to work effectively with clinical professionals, campus partners, external healthcare providers, and local, state, and federal public health agencies.
  • Staff Development and Accountability : Ability to foster professional development, provide meaningful performance feedback, support training initiatives, and promote a collaborative, inclusive, and accountable workplace.
  • Lead diverse teams to support the operational mission and vision of employers by fostering an ethical, inclusive and collegial work environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to support ongoing improvement through courageous, resilient, and catalytic leadership.
  • Lead varying initiatives through a collaborative, service-oriented and communicative approach.

Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule
  • Salary is commensurate with knowledge, skills, and experience. The University offers excellent fringe benefits.
  • The anticipated HIRING RANGE: $270,000 - $285,732 per year, dependent upon qualifications and experience.
