Adult Ed Certified Instructor - ESL

Overview Position Title : Adult Education Certified Teacher – ESL (English as a Second Language) Agency : Waterbury Public Schools Department : Teaching and Learning Classification : Non‑Union, Grant‑Funded Reports To : Principal or other administrative official of a higher grade Compensation : $34.00 per hour; part‑time 10‑month schedule (6:00 p.m.–9:00 p.m., Monday & Wednesday; Tuesday & Thursday) Benefits : None; position exists while funds are available Essential Functions Advocates for equal access to extracurricular and enrichment activities for ESL learners and leads student organizations. Analyzes the classroom environment to enhance social relationships, student motivation, mutual respect, cooperation, and support for students from linguistically and culturally diverse backgrounds. Uses assessment results to diagnose learning difficulties and design teaching strategies for students for whom English is a new language. Considers students’ native language, prior knowledge, and educational background in the design, planning, and delivery of instruction. Creates and modifies the learning environment to enable linguistically diverse students to use effective written, verbal, nonverbal, and visual communication in English and the non‑English language. Builds connections between students’ bilingualism, academic content, and life and career possibilities through curriculum development. Engages families and communities in advocacy and supports for ESL learners. Facilitates learning experiences that validate students’ own cultures while guiding adaptation to U.S. society. Implements instructional strategies that promote critical thinking, problem solving, and performance skills in both content and language. Provides leadership to administrators and instructional staff on meeting ESL learners’ academic and social needs. Coaches students in developing bilingual proficiency and the use of their native language for academic benefit. Supports students with exceptional needs through developmentally appropriate classroom experiences. Receives and evaluates instructional resources, curriculum materials, and assessment tools for inclusivity, accuracy, and relevance. Uses a variety of communicative tools to reduce language anxiety and to facilitate student expression. Leverages technology to enhance instruction and assessment. Reflects on classroom practices and initiates curricular and staff‑development projects to improve ESL outcomes. Qualifications Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college. Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate with the following endorsement required: 088 Non‑English‑Speaking Adults OR 111 TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages), PK‑12. Fluency in the applicable language(s). Completion of a thorough background investigation. Current Connecticut Motor Vehicle operator’s license (may be required). Commitment to required continuing education and adherence to professional standards. Demonstrated knowledge of language development, second‑language acquisition, and cultural‑linguistic diversity. Experience with Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and Scientific Research‑Based Interventions (SRBI). Ability to design short‑ and long‑range instructional plans aligned with curriculum goals and learner diversity. Capability to assess, adapt, and evaluate instruction based on student responses and proficiency levels. Skill in integrating technology into classroom instruction and student assessment. Proficiency in reviewing and evaluating instructional materials for inclusivity and bias. Strong communication skills, both written and oral, for effective interaction with students, parents, colleagues, and community partners. Physical and Mental Requirements Employees must possess adequate physical strength, stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity to perform the duties of the class. A physical examination may be required. The position involves standing, walking, driving, light and medium lifting (up to 50 lbs.), and frequent use of an upright computer and classroom technology.
