2026 Seasonal Ranger I (Middlesex Fells Reservation)

Position Information Location: Middlesex Fells Reservation Start Date: 6/21/26 End Date: 10/31/26 (19 weeks) Work Hours: 40 hours weekly, DAY & EVENING SHIFT; BOTH SAT AND SUN REQUIRED # of positions: 1 Salaries are based upon full-time/40 hours worked per week. Work schedules and days off are at the discretion of the Supervisor. This position may require working weekends and/or holidays. Responsibilities Patrol facilities to promote compliance with rules and regulations, protect natural and park resources, and enhance visitor experience. Coordinate with law enforcement officials for appropriate regulatory action. Conduct patrols by vehicle, bicycle, or foot, enforcing applicable laws and regulations, providing visitor services, assessing facility resources, and assisting visitors with first aid and other public services. Maintain an inventory and condition of issued equipment. Complete Bureau records, reports, files, and logs. Attend seminars, workshops, training sessions, and similar activities to maintain proficiencies. Participate in search and rescue operations in accordance with agency policy. Provide informal and occasionally formal educational programs, demonstrations, and materials for schools and civic groups on ranger programs, park activities, outdoor skills, natural and cultural history, and search and rescue. Respond to and assist park staff at major incidents, assist at special events, and occasionally assist at statewide incidents or functions. Preferred Qualifications Knowledge of standard procedures and techniques for foot, auto, or other types of patrols. Knowledge of principles and practices of park or resource management. Knowledge of principles and practices of recreational programming. Knowledge of general ecology and cultural history. Knowledge of media production techniques and drafting brochures and exhibits. Ability to understand, explain, and apply rules, regulations, policies, procedures, standards, and guidelines governing assigned unit activities. Ability to communicate effectively in oral expression. Ability to give written and oral instructions precisely and understandably. Ability to speak effectively before the public. Ability to follow oral and written instructions. Ability to gather information by examining records, documents, and through observation and interviewing. Ability to accurately record orally provided information. Minimum Entrance Requirements Applicants must have at least two years of full‑time (or equivalent part‑time) experience in park or resource management, environmental education, water resources or water supply management, or natural/cultural history interpretation. An equivalent combination of required experience and educational substitutions may also satisfy the requirement. Substitutions An Associate’s degree or higher with a major in park or recreation management, natural resource management, water resources management, environmental education, or park interpretation can be substituted for required experience. Progress toward such a degree will be prorated based on the proportion of requirements completed. Special Requirements Current and valid Massachusetts motor vehicle operator’s license. Current and valid CPR certificate from the American Red Cross or the American Heart Association. Current and valid standard first aid, personal safety certificate, and first responder certificate issued by the American Red Cross.
