Overview Founded in 1899, the American Astronomical Society (AAS) is the leading professional organization for astronomers and astrophysicists in North America, dedicated to advancing the discovery and understanding of the universe. With a membership of roughly 9,000 individuals, the Society brings together researchers, educators, students, science professionals, and amateur enthusiasts from across astronomy, astrophysics, planetary science, and related disciplines. The AAS supports the professional lives of astronomers at every career stage, organizing annual scientific meetings and conferences, providing professional and workforce development services, and publishing journals and resources. Responsibilities As Chief Executive Officer (CEO), you will: Partner with the Board of Trustees and Strategic Assembly to shape and advance the Society’s vision and organizational strategy. Supervise, coordinate, and direct the activities, programs, and staff of the AAS—including all financial, administrative, and programmatic operations such as meetings, publications, education and member services, and partnerships. Serve as a key spokesperson to members, policymakers, funders, media, and allied organizations. Experience Senior Executive Leadership Experience with responsibility for organizational strategy, operations, and financial stewardship, including direct leadership of a team and a complex budget. Proven track record delivering measurable outcomes, leading organizational change, and sustaining long-term financial health across multi-stakeholder environments with diverse revenue streams. Experience as a public spokesperson and advocate, representing the astronomical community to policymakers, funders, trustees, members, staff, and the media. Strong understanding of the higher education and scientific research ecosystem and the role of professional societies in advancing scholarship, education, and workforce development. Qualifications An advanced degree in astronomy, astrophysics, physics, or a related scientific field is preferred; at minimum, the ability to learn the nuances of new communities and build credibility within them. Translating strategy into executable initiatives that strengthen member value across meetings, publications, career development, education, media, and external advocacy. Safeguarding long-term financial health by balancing mission-driven investments with disciplined stewardship and diversified revenue. Staying ahead of evolving challenges and opportunities for the astronomical community and adapting strategy accordingly. Collaborating and Influencing Articulates the importance of astronomy with authority, building credibility and rapport within the AAS community and with external partners to advance common objectives. Leading People Communicates the AAS’s long-term direction, empowers staff, and cultivates an inclusive, accountable culture with clear benchmarks and data-driven progress reporting. Compensation The estimated base compensation range for this position is $400,000 to $450,000. Other compensation details are provided as part of the formal offer process.
