CNC Machinist – 5-Axis & Swiss

Position Type: Full-Time, On-Site

Location: Knoxville, TN

Shift: Monday–Thursday, 5:00 PM – 3:30 AM (4 × 10-hour shifts)

Overtime: As required

Compensation: Hourly – DOE

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced 5-Axis and/or Swiss CNC Machinist to support precision manufacturing in a low-volume, high-mix environment. This role focuses on advanced setups, complex geometries, and tight-tolerance components, working closely with engineering to support prototyping, new product development, and production runs.

Key Responsibilities

• Set up and operate advanced CNC equipment, including:
• 5-Axis Machining Centers
• Swiss-type CNC lathes (sliding headstock)
• CNC lathes with live tooling and milling capabilities
• Perform complex machining operations involving:
• Simultaneous multi-axis milling
• Turning, milling, drilling, threading, and tapping
• Prove out programs for new parts, prototypes, and engineering change orders.
• Optimize tool paths, fixturing, and setups for accuracy, cycle time, and tool life.
• Conduct first-article inspections (FAI) and detailed in-process inspections.
• Interpret complex blueprints, GD&T, and 3D model-based definitions.
• Adjust tool offsets, feeds, speeds, and make minor G-code edits as needed.
• Hold extremely tight tolerances on complex, high-precision components.
• Troubleshoot setup, tooling, and process issues to maintain part quality.
• Collaborate with engineering, quality, and production teams.
• Mentor and support less-experienced machinists in advanced machining concepts.
• Maintain organized, clean, and safe work areas.

Required Qualifications

• 6+ years of CNC machining experience , with direct experience in:
• 5-Axis CNC machining
• Swiss CNC machining environments
• Strong setup and operation skills on advanced CNC platforms.
• Deep understanding of:
• G- and M-codes
• Multi-axis machining strategies
• GD&T and complex blueprint interpretation
• Experience machining difficult or high-precision materials.
• Advanced proficiency with precision measuring instruments.
• Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of complex jobs.
• Strong communication skills and attention to detail.
• Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to 25 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications

• Technical degree or formal CNC training
• Experience supporting R&D, prototype, or aerospace/medical-style precision work
• Prior mentoring or lead machinist experience
• Strong safety mindset in advanced machining environments
