POSITION OVERVIEW
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) is a vital member of the senior leadership team and is responsible for developing and leading financial management strategies and tactics to enable the organization to carry out its mission successfully and ensure long-term sustainability. The CFO reports to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and serves as a member of the Executive Team while also providing leadership and supervision to the Assistant Vice President (AVP) of Finance and the Director of Information Technology, overseeing a combined team of approximately eight. In addition to financial stewardship, the CFO is responsible for the strategic direction and operational management of the agency's information technology infrastructure.
The ideal candidate will bring experience in the mental health and/or nonprofit sector along with a collaborative, learning-oriented leadership style. They will be skilled at building effective systems and helping teams strengthen their understanding and application of budget and contract management. Experience working within complex Los Angeles-based organizations will enable them to thoughtfully assess organizational needs, establish priorities, and implement sustainable improvements.
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES
Organizational Strategy and Leadership
- Partner with the CEO and senior leaders to define organizational priorities and develop a comprehensive strategic plan to advance the mission, values, and overall objectives of Aviva Family and Children’s Services.
- Develop and implement financial strategies and tactics to support the organization’s mission and goals.
- Guide management, board, and staff on all financial matters.
- Serve as a key management representative for the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee and Audit Committee; lead the Risk Management Committee; and report and present at Committee meetings.
Financial and Operational Management
- Lead the planning, implementation, and management of all fiscal activities of the agency, including accounting, budgeting, forecasting, tax, audit, payroll, and cash management.
- Prepare and present financial reports to the CEO and Board of Directors, providing analysis and recommendations.
- Provide swift decision-making and well-advised leadership on resource allocation and expenditure.
- Ensure compliance with all financial reporting and regulatory requirements, including contracts, and tax filings.
- Identify issues, options, risks, and creative solutions and coordinate the preparation of negotiation packages for governmental agencies.
- Assess risk and ensure appropriateness of agency insurance coverage, including liability, workers’ compensation, malpractice, property, crime, and medical.
- Manage relationships with external partners, including banks, investment managers, auditors and other financial service providers.
Budgeting And Forecasting
- Oversee the annual budget process, working with program managers and other stakeholders to develop realistic and achievable budgets.
- Monitor actual performance against budget and provide regular updates and analysis to the CEO and Board of Directors.
- Develop and maintain financial forecasting models that support long-term planning and decision-making.
Team Leadership
- Recruit, develop, and retain a high-performing team; foster a collaborative culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
- Champion organizational excellence and coach program managers/directors to use financial data as a problem-solving tool through clear program tracking, measurement, and analysis.
Information Technology Oversight
- Provide executive oversight and strategic direction for all information technology functions, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, data systems, and end-user support.
- Directly supervise the Director of Information Technology; set departmental priorities, approve technology investments, and ensure alignment between IT initiatives and organizational goals.
- Ensure the agency maintains appropriate data security, privacy protections, and disaster recovery protocols in compliance with HIPAA, contractual requirements, and applicable state and federal regulations.
- Oversee the development and management of the IT budget; evaluate and approve technology expenditures, vendor contracts, and software licensing agreements.
- Champion the adoption of technology solutions that improve operational efficiency, enhance service delivery, and support data-driven decision-making across the organization.
- Manage relationships with managed service providers, technology vendors, and consultants; ensure service level agreements are met, and contracts are cost-effective.
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in business, accounting, or finance required; MBA or CPA preferred
- Eight to ten years of progressively responsible financial management experience, preferably in a social services agency or non-profit organization with 5 to 7 years of managerial experience required.
- Experience with DMH, DCFS, LAHSA and HSH contracts required.
- Experience translating strategic priorities into a comprehensive financial management strategy and tactics that support the organizational mission and objectives
- Ability to analyze, interpret, and communicate financial data in relation to compliance and performance metrics
- Strong leadership and management skills, with experience building and leading high performing teams
- Superior oral and written communication skills with the ability to communicate financial information to non-financial stakeholders
- Experience overseeing information technology operations, including infrastructure, cybersecurity, and enterprise systems in nonprofit or social services environment
- Working knowledge of data privacy and security requirements, including HIPAA, and the ability to ensure organizational compliance across financial and technology systems
Compensation & Benefits
Aviva offers a competitive executive compensation package commensurate with experience with a salary range of $205,000-$225,000 and a comprehensive benefits package that includes medical, dental, vision, retirement, and vacation and sick time. This role also provides opportunities for professional growth and leadership development.
