Assistant Professor in Clinical/Counseling Psychology

The Department of Psychology at California State University, San Bernardino invites applications for a tenure-track position at the Assistant Professor level. A doctoral degree in clinical psychology, counseling psychology, or a related field (e.g., marriage and family therapy) is expected at appointment. Experience in couples or relationship-focused therapy (e.g., family therapy) is strongly preferred. Other research/clinical areas complementary to the current faculty is welcome, and could include but is not limited to evidence-based treatments for mental-health disorders, PTSD/trauma, anxiety disorders, and discrimination/mental-health disparities. Candidates who are already licensed or license-eligible in California (e.g., licensed in another state or completion of 1,500 hours of supervised post-doctoral experience) are preferred. Candidates who are not yet licensed should be eligible to obtain California licensure within three years of hire and demonstrate a clear pathway toward providing clinical supervision to California Marriage and Family Therapy trainees.

A successful candidate will be able to teach undergraduate and master's level courses in clinical/counseling psychology. Core responsibilities include teaching Family Processes and providing clinical supervision to master's students training to become California marriage and family therapists. Additional teaching opportunities may include graduate courses such as Marriage and Family Skills and Community Disaster, Trauma, and Resilience, as well as undergraduate courses such as Advanced Seminar in Psychology: Clinical, Introduction to Psychotherapy, and Abnormal Psychology. Successful candidates will be scientist-practitioners who ground their teaching, clinical supervision, practice, and scholarship in evidence-based practice and demonstrate the potential to mentor and involve undergraduate and graduate students in a sustained program of scholarship appropriate to a teaching-focused university. The start date for the position is August 16, 2027.

Faculty members in the Department of Psychology are committed to creating engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environments that foster student success. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses that meet the instructional needs of the department, primarily supporting the Bachelor of Arts in Psychology program and the Master of Science in Clinical/Counseling Psychology program. They will demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and mentoring a diverse student population while working effectively with faculty, staff, and students across a wide range of disciplines. They will also contribute to a collaborative departmental community and support students' academic and professional development.

Faculty members typically teach four courses in the fall semester and four courses in the spring semester, although this teaching load is generally reduced during the first two years in accordance with the current collective bargaining agreement. The successful candidate will have opportunities to teach a variety of existing undergraduate and graduate courses. They will be expected to teach Family Processes and provide clinical supervision for Marriage and Family Therapy Skills I and II. Other potential courses they can choose from include Community Disaster, Trauma, and Resilience at the graduate level, as well as Advanced Seminar in Psychology: Clinical; Experimental Psychology: Clinical; Introduction to Psychotherapy; Abnormal Psychology; and Behavior Modification at the undergraduate level.

The successful candidate will also maintain an active program of scholarship appropriate to the mission of a teaching-focused university through peer-reviewed publications and professional presentations. They will mentor undergraduate and graduate students in research, including supervising undergraduate honors theses and master's theses, and will provide clinical supervision to master's-level trainees in the campus's Community Counseling Center.

Doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology, Counseling Psychology, Marriage and Family Therapy, or closely related area, in hand by time of appointment. Licensed or license-eligible as a mental health clinician (i.e., psychologist, MFT, LPCC) in California. Candidates who are not yet licensed are expected to obtain California licensure within three years of hire. Graduate-level coursework or research qualifying the candidate to teach undergraduate courses in clinical/counseling psychology (e.g., Abnormal Psychology, Introduction to Psychotherapy), graduate-level courses in couples and relationship-focused treatment, and meet California requirements to provide clinical supervision to Marriage and Family Therapy trainees (e.g., licensed or license-eligible psychologist, marriage and family therapist, or professional clinical counselor).

• Demonstrated experience in evidence-based couples or relationship-focused assessment, intervention, or supervision.
• Demonstrated potential for excellence in both undergraduate and graduate teaching, including the knowledge to teach courses across clinical and counseling psychology.
• Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses in person with demonstrated effectiveness.
• Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students, particularly first-generation and nontraditional students.
• Demonstrated potential for excellence in clinical supervision. Candidates who are not already eligible to provide clinical supervision to California Marriage and Family Therapy trainees must demonstrate the ability and commitment to satisfy the required eligibility criteria within the timeframe necessary to fulfill the responsibilities of the position.
• Evidence of scholarly productivity and potential to develop a sustained program of scholarship involving undergraduate and graduate students.Graduate-level training in research design and statistics sufficient to supervise master's theses and undergraduate honors theses.
• Research and clinical emphases that complement departmental priorities and support evidence-based practice.
• Demonstrated ability to critically evaluate assessment and apply empirical research to clinical decision-making, supervision, and teaching.
• Demonstrated ethical and professional judgment in teaching, clinical practice, supervision, research, and/or service.
• Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, students, staff, and community partners.
• Additional successful experience as instructor of record or teaching assistant with instructional responsibilities.

The Department of Psychology is housed within the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences and offers a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology with concentrations in General Psychology, Biological Psychology, and Industrial-Organizational Psychology. Graduate offerings include Master of Science programs in Clinical/Counseling Psychology and Industrial-Organizational Psychology, as well as a Master of Arts in Psychological Science. The M.S. in Clinical/Counseling Psychology is a small, cohort-based program that admits approximately 10–15 students each year, allowing for close faculty mentorship. Designed to meet the educational requirements for California licensure as a Marriage and Family Therapist, the program combines rigorous academic training with supervised clinical experience through the department's on campus Community Counseling Center, where faculty provide clinical supervision. Students complete either a thesis or comprehensive examination along with an internship experience, and graduates consistently achieve strong outcomes, including a 91% pass rate on the California licensing examination. The program also has a successful history of preparing graduates for doctoral study in clinical and counseling psychology.
