Job Purpose/Summary
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) plays a critical role in the organization's business and fiscal management, seeking to optimize both financial performance and organizational effectiveness, facilitate long-term planning and ensure the financial health of the organization. The CFO is responsible for managing the Accounting Department. Working closely with the Board of Directors, Chiefs, Affiliate Executive Directors and Grants Department, this position directs and coordinates the organization’s financial affairs according to Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP)-compliance to meet the income needs of the organization. This position also serves on the State Office Senior Leadership team to ensure the CORE Values, strategic vision and operational efficiency of the organization are upheld.
Duties and Responsibilities
Financial Management
- Direct all responsibilities of the Finance Department with direct oversight of the Controller and Accounting and Payroll Manager.
- Ensure the enactment of organization’s monthly financial procedures, including processing donations, reimbursement requests, etc.
- Analyze and monitor Accounts Receivable; establish follow-up procedures.
- Analyze and monitor Accounts Payable and generation of payments. Serve as administrator of organization’s commercial credit card account. Monitor monthly credit card transactions and processes. Oversee reconciliation and entry of credit card expenses into accounting system,
- Maintain General Journal entries and ledger. Monitor account balances and perform account analysis including problem resolution. Generate all required month-end journal reports and general ledger reports and close general ledger monthly.
- Oversee all accounts, ledgers, financial software and reporting systems ensuring policies and procedures are in compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements.
- Manage organizational cash flow forecasting by working in partnership with departments and organizational leaders; collaborate to assess the financial efficacy of program operations and establish finance and administrative systems to support program operations.
- Oversee management of the team that completes bi-weekly payroll and ensure measures are in place for the approval of wages paid.
- Serve as the Administrator for the organization’s retirement plan and oversee the management of contributions and overall fiscal health of the plan. File form 5500 annually.
- Provide assurance that the organization follows Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), and that methodology is in accordance with standards for nonprofit reporting.
- Design and produce financial statements with notes and other required reports on a monthly basis. Monitor financial reports for completeness and accuracy.
- Provide State Departments and Executive Directors with financial reports, analysis and review.
- Manage annual financial audit, filing of Form 990, Federal Single Audit & 403b- Large Retirement Plan Audit.
- Oversee an inclusive process to establish an annual operating budget for the organization as well as individual affiliate and departmental budgets.
- Provide staff training in the areas of budget development, budget management, fiscal accountability, finance procedures, etc.
- Assist CEO and Board of Directors in investments in the areas of research, savings evaluation, implementation of directives, and performance monitoring.
- Serve as the point of contact for all banking services. Maintain, evaluate, and recommend optimum-banking services required by the organization.
- Monitor investment accounts and cash management liquidity needs to maximize return on investments.
- Review and refine accounting procedures for the organization by updating the Policies and Procedures Manual.
Board of Directors Leadership
- Attend Board of Director and Executive Committee meetings to report on financial matters as directed by CEO.
- Serve as the staff liaison for the Board Finance, Audit and Investment Committee, as well as the Endowment Planning Task Force. Prepare packets
- Provide Board of Directors with quarterly financial reports, analysis and review.
Strategic Leadership
- Provide strategic vision, planning and oversight of Communities In Schools of Nevada’s (CISN) financial outlook.
- Manage finance department personnel to include hiring, training, delegation of duties and performance management.
- Be an active participant in the State Senior Leadership Team Meetings.
- Work closely with the CEO to develop evaluation measures and models.
- Travel to CISN affiliates annually to assist with budget, training, and other areas of finance.
- Serve as the Administrator for organization’s Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) software system which includes accounting, customer relationship and grant management systems.
Grants
- Work closely with the Director of Grants, who is responsible for the grants portfolio of the organization.
- Participate in the evaluation and strategic planning of federal and public grant applications.
- Assist in the monitoring of grant budgets and the enactment of financial procedures and policies related to specific grants. Provide all required financial reports for grants.
- Support ensuring that all pertinent grant management data for secured grants is communicated to Affiliate Executive Directors and the State Office.
- Ensure the maintenance of financial recordkeeping systems, including grant and contribution accounting, to ensure compliance with all regulations, generally accepted accounting practices and contractual requirements.
- Serve as a collaborator with the Chief Development Officer for oversight of federal grants of which the organization serves as fiscal agent, including but not limited to Full-Service Community School grant and Department of Health and Human Services hunger prevention grants.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree required. Master’s degree is a plus.
- Significant work experience in accounting management or business management.
- Five or more years of progressively responsible leadership experience in a complex nonprofit or for-profit organization; the fields of social work, education, and/or nonprofit preferred.
- Demonstrated success in leading an organization to new levels through effective finance and funding strategies.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with all stakeholders, both internal and external.
- Ability to exercise discretion and independent judgment on significant matters directly related to the agency’s programs, staff, and students who are served by CISN.
- Advanced knowledge to analyze, interpret or make deductions from varying facts or circumstances. Good communication, problem-solving skills and proactive perspective.
- Possess the experience necessary to thrive in a dynamic environment and manage evolving priorities and competing deadlines.
- Demonstrated experience in directing operations for an organization with central and remote staff, including planning, supervision, and monitoring outcomes.
- Willingness to travel within Nevada and out of state when necessary.
- Knowledgeable of GAAP and nonprofit financial standards.
- Experience using NetSuite for nonprofits preferred.

- Work environment is indoors and climate controlled. May be exposed to outdoor weather conditions.
- Moderate noise levels as found in a business office setting.
- Use of own automobile.
- Must be able to pass a criminal background check, possible fingerprinting, and drug screen.
- Travel is required.
