The Position
The Park Maintenance Worker I performs semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work of landscaped, median, park and recreation areas, and city trees. This is the first working level in the Park Maintenance Worker classification series, reporting to a Park Field Supervisor. Incumbents of positions in this classification rotate through Trees, Medians, Central Park and Sports Complex, Outlying Parks, and Special Crews assignments depending upon training requirements and operational needs.

Definition

Under direction, performs semi-skilled maintenance, construction and repair work of landscaped, median, park and recreation areas, and city trees; performs related duties as required.

Class Characteristics

This is the first working level in the Park Maintenance Worker classification series, reporting to a Park Field Supervisor. Incumbents of positions in this classification rotate through Trees, Medians, Central Park and Sports Complex, Outlying Parks, and Special Crews assignments depending upon training requirements and operational needs. Work is closely supervised; work methods are explained in specific terms and work is subject to frequent review. It is distinguished from the next higher classification of Park Maintenance Worker II by the latter's responsibility to perform journey level work in parks maintenance and to direct the activities of a work site crew, or to operate independent of a crew.

Essential Functions


Employees are given an opportunity to "bid" for assignments on an annual basis. They must be able to perform all assignments as needed. Functions noted are essential to each assignment but marginal if not the employee's primary assignment.


All Assignments:
• May be responsible for vehicle and pedestrian traffic safety in work area.
• Manually transports heavy objects, supplies and materials.
• Cleans equipment, changes tires, grease, lubricate and fuel vehicles.
• Operates ground maintenance equipment including a backhoe and tractor attachments, as well as a variety of hand and power tools.

Trees Assignment:
• Prunes and trims designated street trees to shape and improve growth.
• Operates an aerial pruning platform, brush chipper, chain saw, stump grinder, leaf blower, and pole saw.
• Drives a one-ton truck to locations where work is to be performed.
• Clears areas of leaves, using rake or blower, and remove debris.

Medians Assignment:
• Maintains medians, pedways, and backup lots.
• Plants, cultivates, waters, and fertilizes trees, shrubs, and flowers.
• Waters, mows, weeds, trims, aerates, and fertilizes lawns.
• Sprays or applies fungicides, insecticides and herbicides.
• Picks up litter from medians, pedways and backup lots.
• Repairs and installs sprinkler systems.

Central Park and Sports Complex Assignment:
• Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover, picnic tables, benches, and sprinkler systems.
• Maintains and makes minor repairs to playground/picnic equipment and playground/picnic areas, athletic fields, and playing courts.
• Irrigates, cultivates, prunes, plants, and transplants a variety of turf, shrubs, trees and plants.
• Applies fungicides, herbicides, insecticides, and fertilizers.
• Operates mowing equipment in parks and athletic fields.
• Cleans and clears park grounds, structures and playing fields of debris and hazardous conditions.
• Makes minor repairs and adjustments to irrigation systems.

Outlying Parks Assignment:
• Maintains lawns, trees, shrubs, ground cover, picnic tables, benches, and sprinkler systems.
• Maintains and makes minor repairs to playground/picnic equipment and playground, picnic areas, athletic fields, and playing courts.
• Irrigates, cultivates, prunes, plants and transplants a variety of turf, shrubs, trees and plants.
• Applies fungicides, herbicides, insecticides and fertilizer.
• Operates mowing equipment in parks and athletic fields.
• Cleans and clears park grounds, structures and playing fields of debris and hazardous conditions.
• Makes minor repairs and adjustments to irrigation systems.

Special Assignments:
• Performs general painting, plumbing and carpentry.
• Maintains, repairs and renovates irrigation system controllers, valves, pipes, and related components.
• Digs ditches and trenches.

Marginal Functions
• May be required to direct the work of a crew at a worksite.
• Performs minor mechanical maintenance and repairs on equipment.
• Communicates City policy to the general public.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of: Methods, materials, and equipment used in gardening; common names and requirements of plants, trees and shrubs; characteristics of plant pests and disease and techniques for their control; operation of variety of grounds and park power equipment; safety practices and precautions to be used in work.

Skill in: Operating hand and power tool equipment such as chain saws, sprayer, power saw, pick and shovel, and light vehicles.
Ability to: Work outdoors in all weather; follow oral and written instructions; develop and maintain cooperative relationships with individuals from a variety of cultural and socio-economic backgrounds; make routine arithmetic calculations; learn traffic safety signage; learn to operate a variety of equipment such as front-end loader, pipe pushing machine, brush chipper, stumper, riding mower and various mechanical equipment and vehicles.

Incumbents must possess the physical and mental capacity to work under the conditions described in this document and to perform the duties required by their assigned position.

Education/Experience

Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge and skills necessary to satisfactory job performance would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and skills would be: Graduation from high school and six months experience doing grounds maintenance work.

Positions in this classification require possession of a valid Class C California Driver's License at date of hire and a valid Class B California Driver's License prior to completion of probation; failure to maintain either License will result in disciplinary action up to and including termination.
